National writing organization elects UNM professor

According to a University press release,UNM Assistant Professor of English Cristyn Elder has been elected by the National Council of Writing Program Administrators to the executive board.

One of three newly elected members, Elder will begin a three-year term on July 1, according to the release. The CWPA Board oversees the organization, develops policies and also engages in special projects and initiatives.

According to the release, Elder has been active in strengthening UNM's undergraduate teaching mission during her four years at the University.

The recipient of Student Services’ 2015 Golden Louie Outstanding Award for Faculty, Elder teamed with colleague Bethany Davila to develop UNM’s Innovative Stretch/Studio Curriculum for first-year composition, according to the release, which offers additional support for students who, until 2014, would have taken remedial-writing courses.

According to the release, most of Elder’s efforts, including published research, institutional program building and work at the national level, focus on helping students from all backgrounds and levels of preparation to succeed.

Elder said she was attracted to UNM partly because it is a Hispanic serving institution, according to the press release and that she plans to take those interests to her upcoming work on the Council.

“With my election to the executive board, and as faculty at a Hispanic-serving institution, I'm excited to work with others inside and beyond the organization to strengthen CWPA’s relationship with other minority serving institutions and the field of second language writing,” Elder is quoted as saying in the release.
