UNM professor named Geochemical Fellow

Yemane Asmerom , a professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and director of the Radiogenic Isotope Laboratory, was recognized as one of 70 Geological Society of America Fellows, according to a UNM press release.

The Geochemical Society and the European Association of Geochemistry are recognizing Asmerom with the honorary title of Geochemistry Fellow, according to the release. The award is given to scientists who have, over years, made a major contribution to the field.

According to the release, Asmerom is the first UNM professor to be honored with the title and will be recognized, alongside 11 others who earned the distinction, at the 2016 Goldschmidt Conference in Japan in June.

“I am truly humbled to be honored by the Geochemical Society and the European Association of Geochemistry,” Asmerom was quoted as saying in the release. “It gives me a great deal of satisfaction, and it is nice to be recognized by my colleagues the world over for the work I have done, but also for what we have accomplished here.”

According to the release, Asmerom’s research interests range from early evolution of the solar system, climate change on earth, geochemistry as well as applications of radiogenic isotopes for the study of the solid earth, oceans and climate through time.

Asmerom has conducted international research projects through funding from a number of programs, such as the National Science Foundation, NASA and the Department of Energy, according to the release.

According to the release, Asmerom has been at UNM for more than two decades, having earned a doctorate from the University of Arizona followed by postdoctoral and research work at Harvard as well as the University of Minnesota.

In 1996, the Geochemical Society and the European Association of Geochemistry established the honorary title of Geochemistry Fellow, to be bestowed upon outstanding scientists who have made a major contribution to the field of geochemistry.
