UNM Adapted Sports Festival date set

According to a UNM press release, the University of New Mexico Adapted Sports Festival is set for Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center.

The festival focuses on promoting physical activity and sports for those with disabilities, injury or illness, according to the release. It is additionally used to raise awareness of disability sports and physical activity throughout Bernalillo County.

According to the release, the festival provides an opportunity to provide service-learning opportunities so students may learn how to adapt further programs for people with disabilities.

"The value of the UNM Adapted Sports Festival for individuals with a disability is that is provides an opportunity, through adapted sport and recreation activities, to experience the power of their ability and not focus on their disability," Catherine Tingstrom, assistant professor of Physical Education, Teacher Education and graduate coordinator of Adapted Physical Education, is quoted as saying in the release. "In addition, the festival provides UNM students with a powerful service learning experience by assisting and instructing adults, veterans and children with different types of disabilities".

According to the release, at the festival, participants can take part in various sports, such as adapted kayaking, adapted scuba diving, wheelchair tennis, adaptive crossfit, sitting volleyball and many others.

Registration for this year’s festival is now open, according to the release, and those who do not have a disability but who wish to volunteer may register as well. For more information, visit the event's webpage or contact Tingstrom at ctingsr@unm.edu.
