Southeastern Interfraternity Conference elects UNM student as president

Brandon Aragon, a senior political science and communications major, was elected the first president of the Southeastern Interfraternity Conference outside that particular region of the U.S., according to a UNM press release.

According to the release, the Southeastern Interfraternity Conference is an organization of IFC councils across the United States.

The SEIFC holds its Leadership Academy every year at the Westin Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia, according to the release. Approximately 400 fraternity men and over 50 university IFC councils attend the Academy, whose goal is to educate fraternal men.

According to the release, last year, Aragon, who is a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity at UNM, was elected to the five-member student board as vice president of vendors.

From that position he worked hard to recruit vendors in addition to creating partnerships with businesses to sponsor the conference, according to the press release. Aragon decided to run for president of the organization at this year’s conference, which was held in February.

“I knew I had gained strong and valuable experience. I had to continue my efforts to serve the fraternal movement across the country,” Aragon said.

According to the release, during his time at UNM, Aragon has held a variety of leadership positions on campus, including vice president external of the UNM Interfraternity Council, various positions within his own fraternity and, just recently, a stint as ASUNM senator.

Aragon is making an effort to increase the fraternal movement across the country by helping change the negative stereotypes associated with Greek Life, according to the release. He aspires to grow SEIFC and educational programming to other university IFCs across the nation.
