‘The Mathematics of Crime’ presented by Sigma Xi

According to a UNM release, Sigma Xi will hold a Science and Society Distinguished Public Talk, entitled ‘The Mathematics of Crime,’ on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the UNM Conference Center Auditorium.

The event is co-sponsored by the Albuquerque Section of the Institute of Electrical Engineers and its Life Members Affinity Group, Sigma Xi, UNM Department of Physics and Astronomy and the UNM Division of Continuing Education, according to the release. The event will feature UCLA Professor Andrea Bertozzi, an applied mathematician whose expertise covers nonlinear partial differential equations and fluid dynamics.

Bertozzi has contributed work in the areas of geometric methods for image processing, crime modeling and analysis as well as swarming/cooperative dynamics, according to the press release.

At UCLA, Bertozzi helped develop a computer program that zeroes-in on areas that have the highest probability of crime, according to the press release. Commercial use of the program allows communities to post police officers in “the right place at the right time” and anticipate crime before it happens.

According to the press release, Bertozzi's honors include the Sloan Research Fellowship in 1995, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 1996 and SIAM's Kovalevsky Prize in 2009.

There will be a meet and greet with Bertozzi at 5 p.m. in the UNM Conference Center Auditorium, located at 1634 University Blvd. NE, according to the press release, and pizza will be provided after the lecture.
