Monday on the Street: Do you believe UNM is doing enough to combat sexual harassment on campus?

Do you believe UNM is doing enough to combat sexual harassment on campus?

Erik Medina, graduate student, mathematics

“From the things I’ve read, it looks like (UNM) is doing enough to combat sexual harassment. There are many programs available on campus, they are making an effort and doing studies to assess if UNM is doing enough.”

Ryann Carter, junior, biology and anthropology

“I think they are not because I never see security unless they are in their cars driving past. I really don’t think they are doing anything, and if they are I don’t see it. They could have a bigger presence on campus and allow us to defend ourselves more and give us more opportunities to learn how to defend ourselves.”

Emily Johnson, sophomore, biology

“I think they do a little more than what people say. I’ve heard about ways to prepare against sexual assault, and the newsletters they send out can provide a lot of information on that. I do think there can be a little bit more done, more free self defense classes and more cops. I do think the blue poles are a good idea, but it would be difficult to stand there and wait for someone to show up because who knows how long it could take for someone to show up. For the most part, (UNM) is doing alright, but there are ways they can improve.”

Darren Raspa, graduate student, history

“I read a recent case that (UNM) is not meeting their basic requirements, so I think they should at least meet the basic requirements. That’s the bare minimum, and they should go above and beyond that minimum. It is shameful that they have not reached the bare minimum. To improve, they first need to meet the title 9 requirements and then not make it a case that the individual has to seek out help, but it is already there for them.”
