Women's Basketball: Lobos look to benefit from home court, hosting a pair of weekend games

Lobos fans can get a double-dose of hoops this weekend as the UNM women's basketball team hosts two games at WisePies Arena.

On Saturday the Lobos will take on the Nevada Wolfpack for the second time this season in a Mountain West showdown, followed by a Sunday tilt against Northern New Mexico.

Nevada

New Mexico (10-9, 6-3 MW) met with Nevada (8-11, 1-6 MW) in its first matchup on Jan. 7, with the Lobos taking the close 69-63 win on the road. The game was a back and forth battle that the UNM had to fight hard to pull out.

Junior guard Cherise Beynon scored a game-high 25 points on 8-of-21 shooting, with six of those shots coming from beyond the arc.

Two other Lobos scored in double-digits in the game. Freshman guard Mykiel Burleson scored 18 on the night, and also brought down seven rebounds as part of her efforts.

And junior guard Jayda Bovero scored 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting. She saw plenty of action that game, playing a team-high 35 minutes.

In the series history between the two teams, the Lobos hold a 7-3 lead. The Lobos, with its recent win over the Wolfpack, have an active four-game winning streak.

The Lobos are currently ranked third in the nation in rebounding, according to NCAA.com. As a team, the Lobos are averaging 46.9 rebounds per game, with senior center Richelle van der Keijl leading the team with 9.7.

Van der Keijl’s total is good for second in the Mountain West in rebounds per game, right behind Fresno State’s Bego Faz Davalos.

The Wolfpack have averaged 42.2 rebounds per game, led by AJ Cephas with 8.0 boards and Terae Briggs at 7.9. In the first meeting, UNM crushed Nevada on the glass, out-rebounding the team 52-37.

Beynon pulls down 7.5 boards per game for the Lobos and is also the leading scorer at 15.7 points.

Four other Lobos have double-digit scoring averages on the season—van der Keijl (13.4), redshirt junior guard Alex Lapeyrolerie (11.1), sophomore Jaisa Nunn (10.6) and Burleson (10.0) are the Lobos’ best scorers.

Northern New Mexico

The Lobos added a game to its schedule against Northern New Mexico on Sunday after Eastern Illinois wasn't able to make the trip to Albuquerque in December due to weather conditions.

Northern New Mexico (11-13) competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), a step down from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

NNM’s best scorer is senior guard Demetria Clichee, who puts up a team-high 15.0 points per game.

Rebounding has not been a strong point for Northern New Mexico either – its two best rebounders junior guard Ashley John and sophomore guard/forward Jocelynn Lackey both average less than seven per game.

Tip-off for the game against Nevada is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday at WisePies Arena, and 2 p.m. on Sunday against Northern New Mexico. Both games are set to be streamed live on the Mountain West Network.
