Lobos aim to continue win streak at Blazer Beach Duals

The Lobo beach volleyball team will travel to Birmingham, Alabama this Friday and Saturday to compete in the Blazer Beach Duals.

The pair of home victories last weekend over Colorado Mesa put the Lobos at (10-9) to give the team a winning record for the first time since the season opener.

The season-high three-match winning streak definitely gave New Mexico confidence for this week’s four matches.

“We should be playing at our best,” assistant coach Pauline Manser said in a release. "It’s important that we’re focused and go into this one with everything at our disposal and pushing as hard as we can to get all four wins.”

New Mexico has increased the intensity of its practice to take on the challenge. Manser said she believed the girls on the team have been more tactical and more consistent after putting in the hard work.

With two more weeks remaining for the regular season, the Lobos can finish with a winning record if they carry on with their solid performances in the final seven matches.

The four matches this week could be the catalyst this week to showing New Mexico’s consistency. UNM will play Lincoln Memorial (5-9) and host UAB (9-14) on Friday, The Lobos will meet with UAB again and UT Martin (0-6) on Saturday.

Lincoln Memorial was also on a three-game winning streak. However, the Division II school lost its first encounter of the season against UNM 5-0 on March 18.

Tournament host UAB won five of its last eight matches. But the Blazers lost to Jacksonville State, which was swept by the Lobos.

UT Martin has suffered mightily in its first season of beach volleyball. The Skyhawks have lost all six matches, five coming by way of a sweep.

With four winnable matches this weekend the Lobos have a great chance to improve their record. But the team will have to bring its “A-game” to show it is ready to take that next step.

“I think we can’t take any team lightly,” Manser said. “We have to go in this weekend and be firing on all cylinders and taking every match seriously.”
