Former UNM Football player Meiko Locksley, the son of former UNM head coach and current Alabama co-offensive coordinator Mike Locksley, was shot and killed in Baltimore, MD on Sunday, Sept. 3. He was 25 years old.

With the 2017 season underway, the New Mexico women’s soccer team isn’t focused on the fact that this year marks the 25th season of the program — they’re focused on their matchup this Friday with Houston. It didn’t take long for the inaugural team to make its mark, going 11-5-1 in their first season and quickly laying down a foundation of success for all future iterations of the team to strive for, one that has lead to an all-time record of 211-197-57.

Looking to rebound from a 0-2 road trip to start the season, the New Mexico Men’s Soccer Team will take on UNLV (1-1-0) on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the UNM Soccer Complex. As a result of their rough start, the team has dropped out of the NSCAA rankings.

Despite a career high 10-save effort from goalkeeper Jason Beaulieu, the New Mexico men’s soccer team was unable to generate any offense and fell to the Seattle Redhawks on Sunday by a score of 1-0.

After an opening night 2-1 loss to No.11 Washington, the Lobos look to rebound against the Seattle Redhawks (1-0-0) on Sunday at 7 p.m. in Seattle. The Redhawks also opened their season last Friday with a 1-0 win over Loyola Marymount, a win which extended the longest active home winning streak in Division I soccer to 17 games. The Redhawks are lead by coach Pete Fewing, who is in his second stint as a Redhawks coach and lead the team to their first-ever Sweet 16 appearance in 2015.

The University of New Mexico Department of Physics and Astronomy and the UNM Observatory hosted a viewing party on Monday morning to celebrate the first solar eclipse in almost 40 years. The event was hosted by Associate Professor and Observatory Director Ylva Pihlström with help from UNM Astronomy students. The department had eclipse glasses available, asking for a one-dollar donation in exchange. Televisions featured NASA’s coverage from the path of totality, and the school’s main telescope offered a closer look at the eclipse. Students and professors alike were on hand to answer any questions that observers had about this rare event, providing an opportunity to learn more about the science behind the shadows.

Former Lobo running back Jhurell Pressley signed to a contract with the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday following an injury and the subsequent release of running back B.J. Daniels, according to the team’s website.
