This November there will be a special election for New Mexico. It will be the first time our state will elect a female governor. However, with all the excitement and anticipation, it is important to not ignore the issues. Every election is serious and every vote must be educated. These two women vary on issues, and their approaches toward similar goals are completely different.

My roommate walked in wearing a wife beater and a pair of worn jeans. He was carrying a bike over his shoulders, and as I got up and introduced myself, I thought he was somewhat unlike how I had pictured him before we’d met.

Shortly after becoming UNM President, Dr. David Schmidly signed UNM onto the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment. The commitment is to achieve “climate neutrality as soon as possible.”

I hate green chile.
Something about the feisty little plant just doesn’t connect with my taste buds, but more than I hate green chile, I hate the cult of exclusivity that goes along with the fiery diet staple.

I have decided that Hanna-Barbera’s “Super Friends” cartoon series is really a portrayal of the United Nations for kids and people who need a dumb-it-down approach to politics.

Welcome to the new school year! I expect you have been busy settling into your dorm or new apartment, working out your schedule, finding all your classes and figuring out parking. Whew! Well done. Now maybe you can give a minute’s thought to your health.
I hope you stay well and healthy all year, but just in case, did you know you can get health care right here on campus? Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) is located across the mall to the east of the SUB. Our goal is to help you stay healthy and in school.
Any registered student can use SHAC services. You can be a part-time or a full-time student, with or without health insurance. Here is what we offer:

Editor’s Note: Lobos Abroad is a regular column written by Daily Lobo staff members studying in a different country this semester.
“Ay! Cavalo!” My driver gestures at a lunatic driver by smacking his head with his hand and flinging it out toward the windshield. Between cursing at other drivers and making hand gestures, he tells me that he is Italian but lived in England for many years.

A new year is beginning, which means that new complaints will be bubbling forth from every single person on campus, like the stench of yogurt left in dorm rooms.
The question, though, is what to complain about. Being something of a professional complainer, allow me to guide your whining:

As I lean back on my ergonomic Home Solutions desk chair and bite into my Starbucks spinach and feta wrap, I can’t help but think of how irritated I’ve become by the subtle sponsorship plugs that occur in movies these days.

Dear Dr. Peg,
(08/16/10 7:23am)
During the Daily Lobo’s three-week break, I grabbed a couple cameras and my notebook and headed down to the Gulf Coast to do a multimedia project on the oil spill (as well as a print piece for another Albuquerque publication). Three friends and I drove the 20-plus hours to Grand Isle, La., one of the hardest-hit coastal towns.

When trying to prevent your identity from being stolen, it is recommended that you periodically review your credit report for open accounts that you did not authorize or changes to your mailing address that you did not make. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous companies may try to charge you for something that you are entitled by law to get for free.

Jumbled in the labyrinth of litigation, among the supposed exposés, and building and falling evidence of admissions and retractions, is the proverbial, high-stakes, good-guys-bad-guys game, one that will be viewed through discriminatory lenses depending on what side of the chicken wire you’re on.

There’s no defending the conspired commercial ploy, a down-and-dirty business deal crafted among promoters, boxers and television enablers.

We have seen the pictures of the oil-slicked birds and the sludge that has been washed up on the Gulf’s coastlines. This weekend, we saw local news reports on the effects the BP oil spill had on Fourth of July plans and Gulf resort areas that have in the past drawn many people during the holiday weekend. Businesses are losing money, kids are trying to avoid oil sludge while they build sand castles on the beach, and travel plans are made to avoid places that have been affected by the BP oil spill. While we are saddened over the images of those oil-slicked birds, how long will that last for people? Once we have washed off all the oil we can see, will we still be thinking about the oil we can’t see and the long-term effects of it?

Now that summer has arrived, the financial aid checks have cleared, and we have paid our bills — or most of our bills — it’s time to do something for you. There is a long list of things we would like to spend our leftover bucks on. I decided on a haircut. Being of the activist mindset, and quite partial to doing a little here and there for others, I wanted to donate my hair.

There is a website, NewspaperDeathWatch.com, that is monitoring the decline of the printed newspaper. The site claims to chronicle the death of the newspaper and the rebirth of journalism. The newspaper’s decline has reached new lows, and as the curve of printed news declines, the curve of electronic publications is reaching new heights.

Since March 14, I have spent my Sundays glued to my 42-inch flat-screen HDTV pretending that I am avoiding Japanese artillery, gunfire, horrendous surroundings and malaria.
