assistantsports@dailylobo.com Junior forward Cameron Bairstow and junior guard Demetrius Walker each had 22 points, leading the UNM men’s basketball team to a 105-64 win over Victory University in the team’s first exhibition Wednesday night at The Pit. The Lobos jumped out on Victory early, scoring 12 of the first 16 buckets of the game, finishing at 57.6 percent from the field (38 of 66). UNM held the Eagles to 35.3 percent from the field (24 of 68). UNM has won its last 17 home exhibition games. They are 64-4 all time in those contests. “Ultimately, we wanted to win, so that’s what we did,” Walker said. “We can’t be anything but happy about this and move forward.” Ten different Lobos contributed in scoring with four reaching double figures. Along with Bairstow and Walker, junior guard Kendall Williams netted 17 points and junior guard Tony Snell added 15. UNM’s bench chipped in another 29 points. Sophomore point guard Hugh Greenwood missed all four of his 3-point attempts but pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Eleven of Greenwood’s boards came on the defensive end. Bairstow added eight rebounds. From the free-throw line, UNM made 21 of its 28 attempts. Victory made 7 of 11 from the charity stripe. UNM head coach Steve Alford called the exhibition a “good try run for us” despite some struggles defensively early in each half. The Lobos trailed Victory twice in the first four minutes before taking control, leading by 56-33 at halftime. UNM had 32 points in the paint, 15 off turnovers and 14 off fast breaks in the first half, boasting similar numbers in the final 20 minutes. The Lobos had 24 points in the paint and 11 off turnovers. “The last 10 minutes of both halves were really good offensively and defensively,” Alford said. “We were pretty efficient offensively most the night for 40 minutes, but our defense the first 10 minutes of each half weren’t where I would like it.”
