Something haunting but catchy album

Three stars. Have you ever seen the movie "From Dusk till Dawn?" It's a vampire movie staring George Clooney and Harvey Keitel that's set in a seedy Mexican strip bar. There's a band in the movie that, after the band members turn into vampires, start playing their music on instruments fashioned from the rotting and bloated corpses of the former club patrons.

'Secretary' a dark spin on romance

Somewhere inside even the most cynical of us is the hope that all people have someone out there for them - "Secretary" does a valiant job of upholding that dream. The movie, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal as Lee Holloway and James Spader as Mr. E. Edward Grey, takes a deliciously dark spin on what romance and love can be.

J5 shows dedication to hip-hop

Say real hip-hop. Say it and think of Chali 2na shaking hands and signing autographs with concert-goers who stood in line for hours on a cold night. Say it and think of B-girls and B-boys breaking on the floor of the Sunshine Theater while a diverse crowd anticipated the Jurassic 5's entrance.

Distinguished slam poets return to UNM campus on Busted Tooth tour

by Marisa Demarco Daily Lobo Eirik Ott, a.k.a. Big Poppa E, had to pee in a bottle once while driving at 70 miles an hour - but that's not the point of this article. The point is that this evening, two renowned poets who make up Broken Word, Big Poppa E and Matthew John Conley, will be performing at UNM while on the Busted Tooth tour.

by Stuart Overbey Daily Lobo Although "True North: A Mystery Play" draws on playwright Kevin Paul's long-time fascination with survival stories, he promises there is no cannibalism in the play. "There's only a brief mention of it," Paul said. "Nothing horrible happens.

Eatery offers after-hours dancing

by Mira Poling Daily Lobo Electronic music lovers have a new venue in Albuquerque where novel concepts reside in an old setting, rich in family culture and tradition. Jason Stephens, great-grandson of the New Chinatown Restaurant's founder, is keeping the family business fresh by turning it into an 18 and over "music and sound venue" on weekend nights from 11p.

Comic life not all fun and games

A documentary about comedians shouldn't have to be funny. Anyone expecting to leave the theaters with a stitch in the side and an increased repertoire of one liners might be a tad disappointed with the new Jerry Seinfeld documentary "Comedian." "Comedian" chronicles a chapter in the life of Jerry Seinfeld the person, rather than Jerry Seinfeld the television character.

Capoeira a stunning art form

Handstand, back-flip, jump, kick, headstand - the human body is an amazing vessel, capable of almost anything. At first glance, Capoeira seems like a martial art-based method of self-defense. An abundance of movements incorporated in Capoeira are grounded in martial arts, such as controlled kicks and front and back-flips executed slowly and precisely.

Foo Fighters' One By One has dark yet well-rounded sound

by Kenn Rodriguez Daily Lobo It would've been understandable if Dave Grohl had closed shop on the Foo Fighters after the band's last record, There Is Nothing Left to Lose. What else was there to accomplish? He'd already beaten long odds by hitting big with his first record, Foo Fighters.

Directing a distinct challenge

by Amber L. Earls Daily Lobo What can I say about directing "Garage" in Words Afire? Well, it's crazy, but very rewarding - especially when you have very talented people to work with. "Garage," written by Heidi Griffin, is a short one-act play about how parental abandonment affects two sisters, Sarah and Molly, by strengthening their sisterly bond and forcing them to grow up.

'8 Mile' about self-reliance

To be honest, when I first heard that rapper Eminem was slated to star in a movie based on his life, I couldn't help but remember similar pop-star movie disasters. Remember 1991's train wreck "Cool As Ice," starring Vanilla Ice? Or the 2000 catastrophe "Da Hip Hop Witch," starring Vanilla Ice and Eminem? How about "Glitter," the embarrassment that killed Maria Carey's career? And there's always moments of cinematic greatness like the sweet coming of age skin-flick staring Britney Spears in her bra and panties and anything with Snoop Dog's name attached to it.

31Knots stands alone in a sea of clones

by Abel Horwitz Daily Lobo In a musical world where originality is shunned and people still think Eminem is the next Elvis, some of us are almost salivating for something different. We need a band deeper underground, one that's invisible on the radar of the mainstream.

Exhibit shows creative student photography

by Dustin Habermann Daily Lobo Well kids, we're in that final relaxed moment of the semester -- right after midterms and well before finals. In three short weeks you will not have the time to shower, do laundry, eat, sleep, or perform many functions usually under the jurisdiction of your medulla oblongata.

Hailed by fans, Rolling Stone - who called it "a masterpiece" and "the first great album of [2002]" - and alternative press alike, the incredible journey this album took on its way to finally being released is now well-known.

Praise for the 'Child'

Dance, music show a 'Blast'

Staff Report "Blast!," an event that's part of the Ovation Series at Popejoy Hall, is making some big promises. "I was helpless in the path of this visual and aural juggernaut," said Kevin Nance, critic for The Tennessean in a press release. "It far outdoes ("Stomp" and "Riverdance") with youthful energy and cocky panache.
