Letter: The Daily Lobo needs to apologize to Abdallah, students for innacurate reporting

Editor, Recently, on the Daily Lobo's Facebook page, a screen shot of an iPhone note was posted in order to update students about the Milo Protest on campus. The contents of this screenshot were accurate but the reporting by the Daily Lobo staff above was HIGHLY inaccurate. The post was also shared over 71 times throughout Facebook with factually incorrect statements.

Editor, I have come to the conclusion, after attending last night's demonstration against Milo Y that we are going about our protests the wrong way. Let me explain. This latest (but not new by any means) wave of bigotry in our society, fueled by social media and political rhetoric which serves only to legitimize it, has me, like so many other people in this nation, at a moral and ethical impasse with colleagues, compatriots, and even family members When I am work - at a job I need and love - I have to remain silent while people I once respected and now question in terms of their fundamental morality and humanity cheer and high five each other as our new, clearly mentally impaired POTUS enacts incomprehensibly inhumane and immoral executive orders. I don't leave my office much.

Editor, In an effort to “come to the table,” to quote Ryan Ansloan, (former) president of UNM College Republicans, and the part of the group of individuals responsible for inviting Milo Yiannopoulous to campus on January 27th, we would like to openly address a few points. To begin with, we would like to address his “come to the table” comment. Where were the College Republicans last December when six different student organizations invited them to discuss safety concerns about Milo speaking? They ghosted us.

Editor, In regards to the impending visit of Milo Yiannopoulos, poster boy of the alt-right and editor for the website Breitbart, I implore the UNM faculty, as well as the student body, to consider the implications and potential consequences of his visit. I assume that there is already concern on behalf of safety, otherwise they would not have been prepared to staff it so heavily with security. To whom does this concern vest itself in?

Letter: Inviting Yiannopoulos endangers students

Editor, I write to you to inform you that bringing Milo Yiannopoulos to the UNM campus not only breaks UNM policy against harassment, but also puts fellow students in danger. According to UNM’s policy, it “forbids unlawful discrimination and/or harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, physical or mental disability, age, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity, ancestry, spousal affiliation, medical condition, or veteran status” (Administrative Policy 2720 & Regent’s Policy Manual Section 2.3).

Editor, I am a parent to a current UNM student and I'm concerned about the recent events that took place on January 20th at the University of Washington. Mr. Yiannopoulos was having a speaking event at their university, there was a protest at his speaking event and a shooting took place at the event. A person was shot at this event and was critically injured; I'm not aware of his/her current condition but I am concerned about what may occur at the speaking event that is taking place Friday at the University of New Mexico.

Editor, Why are violent movies called action movies? Why are videos of sex, not matter how affectionate, how romantic, labeled dirty? Why do families watch movies full of glamorized war, robbery, murder, revenge, rape, greed and booze? Why the addiction to violence for entertainment? Why do families watch brutal boxing and mixed martial arts of man against man and woman against woman bruising, bloodying and brain injuring each other? Why would any adult watch that evil crap?

Editor, It has come to my concern that Milo Yiannopoulos is actually coming to campus on Friday to speak. From what I understand from UNM's policy concerning speakers coming to campus is that they have to have an educational purpose. I do not consider Yiannopoulos speaking at UNM to be educational, rather discriminatory toward marginalized groups on campus such as LGBTQ members, women, Muslims and African Americans.

Editor, Leftist student groups at the University of New Mexico claim that Milo Yiannopoulos’ event next Friday will lead to “physical violence and expand bias against” them in a letter to University administration, the Daily Lobo reported. Yiannopoulos, the provocative Breitbart editor, flamboyantly criticizes political correctness, liberal politics and culture at college campuses across the United States for his “Dangerous Faggot Tour.” He also fervently defends free speech and explains how conservatives face censorship from fellow citizens, universities and the media.

Prophet Martin Luther King, Jr. damned the Vietnam War in his most controversial speech on April 4, 1967 – exactly one year before he was assassinated. King damned the U.S. mass murder of Vietnamese people. King said, “The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today is my own government.” The New York Times, the Washington Post, many newspapers nationwide condemned his strong message of truth. Many whites, many blacks, the White House, even most of King’s inner circle of black leaders condemned his strong message of truth. He suffered much hatred, many death threats.

Letter: Domestic violence needs to be taken more seriously

Domestic violence is a topic we know that exists, and yet it's something the common person isn’t aware about how often it happens. The disturbing part about this topic is the high percentage it’s shown in our own state. In 2011 alone there was 18,740 cases reported by the law enforcement (“About Domestic Violence"). In these 18,740 cases it was reported that 6,219 children were reported on the scene. Domestic violence is a problem that has a trickle-down effect, placing a burden on more than one person’s life.

Have you ever pictured yourself walking into a building and not knowing where you are? Well, this is a very common feeling for me at the University of New Mexico. Throughout my entire college experience, I have had to deal with this issue more times than anyone could imagine. I am a blind student who has had to adapt to countless ways this campus is not accessible. Due to my blindness, not only do I have to jump through hoops, but I also have to rely on my sighted peers on a daily basis.
