The Institute of Public Law, a division of the UNM law school, requested $60,000 Saturday to start a UNM chapter of NMPIRG. The money would come from the Student Fee Review Board, which allocates money from student fees to UNM departments.
UNM needs to work on its image, said Richard Kilmer, a principal of Kilmer and Kilmer, a brand consulting firm. Beginning in the fall semester, the company examined how the University represents itself at the request of the Board of Regents Advancement Committee.
Student Leif Rotsaert said he spent about $450 on textbooks at the Bookstore last fall semester, but he hasn't tried to sell them back. "It's like pennies," he said. "It's not worth it." Rotsaert said he didn't pay as much this semester but still spent about $300. "Those (publishing) companies just want to make money off us," he said.

Residents and fellows at the UNM School of Medicine will vote Jan. 31 on whether to form a union. If they formed a union, the physicians would bargain for salaries and benefits as a group, rather than individually.
Student Mary Fortuin's room in Coronado Hall was occupied by unwelcome guests over winter break - mice that littered her room with feces. "It just makes my skin crawl," she said. "I know the mice aren't going to kill me, but their diseases might."
The MyUNM Web site crashed Tuesday morning because about 2,500 students tried to login at the same time, said Moira Gerety, director of ITS Computing. "The system is appropriately designed to handle what we expect with concurrent users," she said. "But when everybody hit the login screen concurrently, that piece choked."
Staff Report UNM Police arrested a suspected car thief Jan. 10 behind the Golden Pride restaurant at 1830 Lomas Blvd., said Lt. Pat Davis, UNM Police spokesman. When police tried to pull over Saul Puma, 21, he crashed a stolen vehicle into another vehicle driving down Lomas Boulevard.
Teresa Neely, director of Zimmerman Library, said she has been eager to reopen the east wing of the library since the fire in April. "We're very, very happy to open up this much larger space," she said. Fran Wilkinson, dean of University Libraries, cut the yellow caution tape blocking the east wing Tuesday. Neely said faculty and staff had to share offices for the last year and were grateful for the reopening.
When Lori Lipman Brown began her job in 2005 as director and lobbyist for the Secular Coalition for America, she was worried about criticism. "I was fearful that everybody would hate me, and I would go from being a semi-beloved Nevada politician to a hated representative of atheists," she said.

Van Sanders, president of the Buffalo Soldiers Society of New Mexico, said King's vision should be kept alive. "All groups have to be a part of the dream," Sanders said. Sanders said King helped the U.S. overcome racism and organized multicultural events. King would have been 78 on Monday.
After the record-setting storm crippled both interstates and dumped 11.3 inches of snow at the Albuquerque International Sunport on Dec. 29, it can be hard to imagine that no two flakes are alike.
A winter storm blew through Albuquerque over break, bringing more snow to the city than ever recorded. More than 13 inches of snow was dumped on campus on Dec. 28 and 29. It damaged trees and caused roofs to leak around campus, said Mary Vosevich, director of Physical Plant.
Viola Florez, dean of the College of Education, said that when Chester Travelstead was dean, he would do anything to improve the college, even if it meant getting on his hands and knees to clean a mess.
Lou Ann Hillman said her sister, alumna Dee Johnson, was one of the hardest working first ladies of New Mexico, but her family and friends also remember her as a humble person who loved life, laughter and people. Johnson died of natural causes on Dec. 21. She was 54.
