Staff members urged to become students

Staff Report

UNM staff members who want to take classes but don't want to travel around campus to see an adviser, register and pay for classes, will have their chance today.

Staff as Students is hosting a fair today from noon to 2 p.m. in the SUB Ballroom where staff members can take care of everything they need to become a

student.

"It's a one-stop shop for employees who are interested in registering for any of our academic programs," said Anne Mayer, a development manager in Human Resources. "Staff can have a difficult time during the work day to get around to all of the services they need to, so hopefully this can help them out."

About 100 staff members

received degrees from UNM last year, she said.

It's important for the University to help staff members take classes, she said.

"It's one of the biggest perks of being on staff here," she said. "It's something that attracts a lot of people to work at UNM. They want to advance their careers, and this is a good place to do it."

Benefits-eligible staff can get tuition waivers at the fair, and the Bursar's Office will be there to accept them.

The program helps UNM, she said.

"I think it's very good for the University, because it helps develop the skills of the staff," she said. "Having a well-educated work force can't be a bad thing."

The fair happens once per

semester.
