Richardson dismayed by low turnout

By Ryan Floersheim Daily Lobo Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill Richardson once again made a campaign appearance at UNM Thursday, this time to a crowd of about 40 republicans, democrats, students, faculty and area residents. The crowd's size, which Richardson said he expected to be larger, was symptomatic of what he believes to be one of New Mexico's biggest problems - young voter's turnout.

Information systems get upgrade for efficiency

by Justin Flam Daily Lobo Due to a pending series of technology upgrades, UNM students may have to wait in fewer lines in the future, said Fred Youberg, manager of the Electronic Management Information Systems project. The upgrades, which will affect some administrative processes, campus information systems and other support systems, are meant to increase the efficiency of services among University faculty, staff and students.

ASUNM senators vote in new agency

The ASUNM Senate established an executive agency at UNM for the first time in 10 years during its meeting Wednesday. The Associated Students of UNM Senate voted unanimously to add the Community Experience as the seventh executive agency. It joins the Crafts Studio, Election Commission, Homecoming Committee, Lobbying Committee, Southwest Film Center and Student Special Events as committees that provide special services to the undergraduate student body.

UNM students hit wall with business

A group of UNM students who started their own on-campus delivery business have been told by University officials to stop operations this week due to a conflict with an exclusive food-service contract signed by UNM in September 2000. Barry Schneider, Jesse Kooperman and Elliott Paul, the three student owners of Underground Services, said they should have the right to run their own business on campus or at least be allowed to petition the University for a review of their request.

N.M. Commission on Higher Education loses its director

Bruce Hamlett, executive director of the Commission on Higher Education, publicly announced Monday his resignation because after nine years, he said he has accomplished the goals he established for himself. "Over time, your ability to get things done begins to wane," Hamlett said.

Faculty regent motion passes first test

UNM's Faculty Senate voted Tuesday to approve resolutions for both a new faculty regent on the Board of Regents and to hold an open forum for all presidential-search finalists. Faculty Senate President Beverly Burris said that the resolution to place a faculty regent on the board came from discussion and widespread support from faculty last year.

Student charged with sex crime

A former student of the UNM School of Medicine was arraigned Sept. 13 on six counts of third-degree criminal sexual contact of a minor - 16 months after he allegedly molested his former girlfriend's seven-year-old daughter. Christopher Tape, a former undergraduate student in the School of Medicine, is no longer taking classes or performing clinical rotations at the UNM Hospital, said Sam Giammo, director of public affairs for the UNM Health Sciences Center.

Horse tests positive for West Nile in North Valley

In an announcement made yesterday at the Duck Pond, Rudy Bueno, Albuquerque environmental health supervisor, said that a horse in the North Valley has tested positive for the West Nile Virus. The confirmation makes Bernalillo County the eleventh county to report the presence of the virus in horses.

Student regent to be selected this fall

NMSU program receives award

Staff Report The New Mexico State University Counseling Center's Choices Program has been chosen as the winner for the 2001-2002 Annual College and University Drinking and Driving Prevention Award. The award is sponsored by AAA New Mexico and the Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention, and includes a $1,000 award.

$300 in cash taken from on-campus Pizza Hut

Staff Report The Pizza Hut concession stand near Ortega Hall was broken into and robbed some time between 5 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursday. The stand's manager told UNM police that an unknown person broke the rear door lock and stole a metal box containing $300 in cash.

Exhibit features Chicano art

Staff Report Chicano issues such as culture discourse, labor rights and the loss of ancestral lands are on exhibit through Nov. 1 at the Albuquerque Sunport. The exhibit, which is made up of three panels displaying photographs, literature, artifacts and historical documents, commemorates the work of several Chicano leaders as well as the role UNM's Chicano/a Studies program in establishing Chicano Studies as a legitimate academic field.

President Bush asked Congress Thursday for authority to "use all means," including military force if necessary, to disarm and overthrow Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein if he does not comply quickly with United Nations demands that he abandon all weapons of mass destruction. Separately, the White House pressed reluctant allies Russia and France to support a U.N. Security Council resolution authorizing force.

Rentention scores high in '02 statistics

University College Dean Peter White said that UNM is already making large strides in retaining students - a statement backed up by the official 2002 enrollment report. "A lot of students are under the impression that we have a very bad problem with retention rates and I don't think that's any longer true," White said.
