OPINION: A preview of the Lobo women's basketball team

The University of New Mexico’s women’s basketball team and Head Coach Mike Bradbury are hoping to build on their 18-14 record from last season. The team managed to retain some key talent but due to the ever-changing landscape of college basketball, it also lost multiple players to the transfer portal and graduation. Here's a look at the returning players and new additions to the roster, starting with the returning players.

OPINION: Bobbleheads of the week — NBA Finals edition

This week saw one of the most exciting NBA Finals in many years; it was the first time the series went a full seven games since 2016 and it was full of close games. It featured one team full of rising stars and the reigning MVP — the Oklahoma City Thunder — and an underdog team whose path to the finals was filled with near-impossible comebacks at every step — the Indiana Pacers. The series had quite a few heroes who were expected to be great, and were, like the OKC Thunders’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and role players who tried to will their team to victory.

New Mexico United dominates San Antonio FC in overtime

On Saturday, June 21, New Mexico United snatched another win — in a heart pounding overtime United surged past San Antonio FC and left the pitch having jumped to first place in the West Conference, after winning the game 4-2. Under the blazing sun United got ready to defend their winning record. The early minutes of the game unfolded slowly. Both teams were locked in a physical battle which resulted in multiple fouls causing United to earn a penalty kick. Jaylin Lindsey calmly stepped up and converted, putting New Mexico on the scoreboard with a confident strike.

Lobos take home national titles at NCAA Track and Field Championship

The University of New Mexico Lobos secured national titles in three separate events over the course of the four-day NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which took place in Eugene, Oregon, on June 11-14. The Lobos sent a total of 11 athletes to Eugene. They sent only one athlete in 2024. The Lobos finished fifth nationally on the men's side and ninth on the women's. The Lobos took first and second place in the men's 10,000 meter. Ishmael Kipkurui became the national champion with a time of 29:07.70, and Habtom Samuel finished with a time of 29:08.73 and became the national runner-up after having won the race last season.

OPINION: Bobbleheads of the week — Norway Chess edition

Where there’s a victor, there’s a loser, and sometimes certain athletes contribute to their team’s or their own shortcomings. These athletes are favorably called bobbleheads. Norway Chess saw 12 of the highest-ranking male and female chess grandmasters competing over ten rounds of classical chess games. While some of the players exceeded expectations while others made tremendous blunders, making them the bobbleheads of the week.

Where there’s a victor, there’s a loser, and sometimes certain athletes contribute to their team’s shortcomings. These athletes are favorably called bobbleheads. After a long, grueling playoffs, the Stanley Cup Final is set. The Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers will battle for the Stanley Cup for the second year in a row.The Panthers are making their third finals appearance in as many years and the Oilers hope to be the first Canadian team to win the cup since 1993. Here are the bobbleheads who helped book their teams’ late flights to Cancun.

Lobos close regular season with crucial home series

It was a bittersweet moment on Santa Ana Star Field on May 15-17, as the University of New Mexico Lobos played their final regular season series against the Fresno State University Bulldogs. When the series was all said and done the Lobos said goodbye to the regular season and set their eyes on the Mountain West Tournament. The Lobos started the series out with high energy and were ready to make their last home series count, for themselves and fans.

OPINION: Is Tony Romo a Hall-of-Famer?

Say what you want about Tony Romo, but it's undeniable Tony Romo is a Hall of Famer. Once you look into his tape, statistics and impact on the National Football League, it’s easy to say he’s possibly one of the most overlooked candidates of his generation. Ask an average football fan if Tony Romo belongs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, they will probably tell you that “He choked in the playoffs” or some other negatives. The bigger picture is that Romo is one of the most creative and intelligent quarterbacks of the modern era and for that he deserves Hall of Fame consideration.

Isotopes drop game 2, bounce back with game 3 walk off

On May 14 and 15, the Albuquerque Isotopes took on the Tacoma Rainiers for games 2 and 3 of the series. The Isotopes lost the series opener 9-1 to Tacoma on May 13 and looked to take a win and tie the series up 1-1 in game 2 on May 14. The Isotopes got off to a good start in game 2 as after a scoreless first inning by both teams. The Isotopes batted in 3 runs with the highlight coming from Sterlin Thompson who had a two run double.

OPINION: The 5 greatest Lobo women’s basketball players

Since the University of New Mexico’s women’s basketball team was officially established in 1974 — 75 years after the founding of the men’s basketball team — and began playing sanctioned games against other collegiate teams, there have been many outstanding players appearing in The Pit. However, these five are the best of the best. Vianè Cumber, is an honorable mention for this list. The Sandia High School graduate played all four years, from 2021-25 of her collegiate career at UNM and over that career became the all-time leader in three-pointers made at the University. 5. Where there’s a victor, there’s a loser, and sometimes certain athletes contribute to their team’s shortcomings. These athletes are favorably called bobbleheads. The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs is starting to wrap up, with the Carolina Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers punching their tickets to the conference finals. While those teams had players who propelled them forward, those knocked out featured players who helped book their teams’ trips to Cancun.

United lets crucial points slip against Phoenix Rising

New Mexico United faced off against Western Conference foe Phoenix Rising at Rio Grande Credit Union Field on Saturday, May 10. United entered the contest third in the conference and needing a win to jump Monterey Bay for second place. Phoenix, meanwhile, had a rough start to the season. They came into the match in 10th place and winless in their last three games, including a loss to MLS side Houston Dynamo.

Izabella Kubiak-Reseigh: A great reporter and a die-hard sports fan

Growing up, Izabella Kubiak-Reseigh was always a huge sports fan. Watching sports throughout her life inspired her to pursue journalism, and now she’s graduating from the University of New Mexico with a degree in journalism & mass communication and a minor in military studies this semester after working for two semesters as a sports reporter for the Daily Lobo. While her love for her other teams goes deep, down to her core Kubiak-Reseigh bleeds green and yellow for the Green Bay Packers. She is also a fan of the Milwaukee Bucks, Milwaukee Brewers and Colorado Avalanche. Her love for these teams and sports in general comes from her family, including her godfather and her dad.

Isotopes rally in the eighth, winning over Bees

The Albuquerque Isotopes secured a 5-2 victory against the Salt Lake Bees for the fourth game of the series on Friday, May 2. The Bees were in the driver's seat at the start of the game, leading the series 2-1 after defeating the Isotopes 8-3 in the third game of the series the day before.

Baseball: Lobos come out on top against San Jose State University

On April 25-27, the University of New Mexico Lobos baseball team went up against the San Jose State Spartans. The Lobos started the series opener on April 25 in the right rhythm, batting in six runs in the first inning. They then continued to put up a large number of runs on the board.

On Saturday, April 26, New Mexico United faced off against Union Omaha, where it secured a 2-0 victory. United kicked off the first half of the game with a burst of energy, ready for what was to come. Fans packed the stands, ready to cheer on the team with traditional chants. United did not disappoint; it had a great first half.

From Johnson Field to CBS Sports: Daily Lobo alums reflect on their journeys

For many University of New Mexico students, the Daily Lobo isn’t just a student newspaper — it’s the start of a lifelong career. Two former reporters, Ryan Tomari and Isabel Gonzalez, carved their own paths from the Lobo newsroom to the world beyond. Ryan Tomari Tomari’s journey into journalism began before he ever stepped onto UNM’s campus. A natural storyteller and lifelong sports fan, Tomari worked as a high school sports reporter, inspired by a teacher who had once written for Stars and Stripes. After deciding to stay closer to home, he ended up at UNM, where he found his place at the Daily Lobo in 2008.

Baseball: Final showdown ends in victory — Lobos sweep Aggies

The University of New Mexico Lobos faced off against the rival New Mexico State University Aggies for the last time this season and delivered a game-winning strikeout April 22, ending the final match up 7-6. The Lobos faced the Aggies four times this season, which all ended in victories. Leading 7-6 on the scoreboard and having two outs, the Lobos struck out the last batter, eliminating the possibilities of a tied game. This is the first time this season the Lobos had a one-run advantage over the Aggies, where victory was truly on the line.
