The UNM Volleyball team won game one, and then it was done. The Lobos (7-4) fell to Texas Christian University (14-1) in three of four games: 25-18, 16-25, 21-25, 19-25, in front of 2,272 fans on ‘Jam Johnson’ and ‘Love Red, Live Green’ night Friday at Johnson Center.
The UNM men’s soccer team has finished its non-conference schedule undefeated. The Lobos, ranked No.11 in the nation, beat Loyola Marymount 2-0 on Friday night to take UNM to 6-0-2 for the season. Forward Devon Sandoval took over the game in the second half, providing the assist for midfielder Giovanni Rollie’s goal before scoring one of his own with a volley.
The UNM women’s soccer team scored late, but still beat the Sooners on Friday. The game looked to be headed to overtime after Oklahoma’s Dria Hampton tied the game with 10 minutes left, but Lobo forward Jennifer Williams scored her second goal of the game with five minutes remaining to beat the Sooners 2-1. “We fought the whole entire game,” Williams said.
The UNM volleyball team opens its Mountain West Conference (MWC) play tonight at Johnson Center against a familiar foe, the MWC powerhouse Texas Christian University. “We have a rivalry against TCU,” senior outside hitter Kelly Williamson said.
The Lobo men’s soccer team will try to continue its unbeaten start to the season when it takes on Loyola Marymount tonight.
The UNM women’s soccer team takes on Oklahoma tonight as both teams look to establish a winning record. The Lobos are currently 4-4-2 while the Sooners are 5-5. The “Stuff the Stadium” game on Friday will be the Lobos’ third straight home game, after playing five straight games on the road. Junior Natalie Jenks said the team has been practicing well this week and expects the team to come out with a victory. “We’re pretty excited about it,” she said.

Deon Long is one of the only bright spots on this season’s UNM football team. Through three games of the 2011 season, wide receiver Long has made an impact on the team by being its most potent offensive player. The freshman has accumulated more than half of the Lobos’ total offense through the first part of the season, with 496 all-purpose yards.
The UNM men’s tennis team hasn’t won the Mountain West Conference since 2009, but the team’s goal each season is to win the conference and go on to conquer even greater feats.
Not even the weather stopped Texas Tech quarterback Seth Doege. In a game hampered by two lightning delays, Doege helped to defeat the Lobos 59-13 on Saturday at University Stadium, setting a new NCAA completion percentage record. Doege threw for 401 yards and five touchdowns and completed 40 out of 44 passes.
The UNM men’s water polo team is relatively unknown on campus, but it has made real strides in the past two seasons in the Rocky Mountain Conference (RMC). “It’s been a slow buildup over the past couple years, but since last season we have picked up a lot of momentum from our coach and having committed players,” senior Bryant Shuey said.
UNM senior Roxie McFarland lined up to take what might have been the Lobos’ last chance to win the game. With the scores tied at one on Sunday, UC Riverside gave up a foul just outside of the penalty box with a little over a minute remaining.
The one word I can use to sum up a sporting event I watched on Saturday: disappointing, and I am not talking about the UNM football team’s lost to Texas Tech. I’m referring to the highly anticipated fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr.
As Lobo football prepares to face powerhouse Texas Tech on Saturday it isn’t the only UNM team gearing up to play a ranked opponent on national television. The No. 16 ranked UNM men’s soccer team faces No. 4 Akron tonight in Akron, Ohio, on national television on the Fox Soccer Channel at 5 p.m.
It hasn’t been an easy two weeks for the UNM football team. Last week the Lobos played No. 13 Arkansas, and this weekend they will play Big 12 powerhouse Texas Tech at University Stadium. The Red Raiders are coming off a 50-10 win over Texas State.
The UNM women’s soccer team is coming off of two straight losses against Oregon State and Washington, but they may be able to salvage its record when the Lobos host Cal.
The UNM men’s soccer team has only allowed two goals this season — but there could have been nine more if it wasn’t for Victor Rodriguez. Rodriguez’s efforts have helped the Lobos earn a 4-0-1 record through the first five games of the season.
It took the Lobos men’s soccer team just over a minute and a half to do what they had failed to accomplish for the entire game prior.
The UNM volleyball team is finally over the tournament hump. The Lobos won their first tournament of the season at the Comcast/Sheraton Lobo Invitational over the weekend, going 3-0 against UC Irvine, Portland State and Montreal. In two previous tournaments the Lobos had failed to finish first, but head coach Jeff Nelson said everything came together this time around.
