No NBA? No problem. UNM basketball is here. The first game of the season is less than two weeks away, and full-time practice began over the weekend.
The UNM women’s basketball team has a conference championship in its sights. Last season, UNM finished with a 13-18 record and won just five games in conference on the way to its seventh place finish in the MWC.
The UNM men’s golf team is getting into the swing of things. The team, currently ranked No. 15 in the nation, won the Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio, Texas last weekend by eight strokes.
The Lobo Men’s Soccer team is the last undefeated squad in the nation. The No.5 team is the only team in the country yet to lose a game after No.1 University of Connecticut, lost 2-0 on Wednesday to West Virginia. The Lobos are currently 11-0-2, and go one the road to face Seattle University on Friday.
Mike Locksley’s 2-26 record didn’t earn him many fans off the field, but on the field his players supported him. Most of the players said they were sad to see him go. “It was sad at the moment, but we have to move on,” wide receiver Ty Kirk said.
Sara Halasz’s season is over before it even started. Halasz, a junior guard for the Lobo women’s basketball team, tore her right ACL last Friday in a team scrimmage at the Lobo Howl, putting her out for the entire season. She was chosen as a preseason All Mountain West Conference selection, and the injury is the same one she suffered last year that also benched her. “I am not going to let that bring me down,” Halasz said.
Ross Millington could go down as the greatest runner in the history of UNM. The 5-foot-7-inch, 125-pound Brit moved to Albuquerque right out of high school from Stockport, England, in January of 2009. Living alone, meeting new people and a being in a different part of the world surprised Millington. “I didn’t really know what to expect,” he said.
The “Handball Lobos” are ready to get a hand on their second year as an official club team. The handball team was formed last fall by four students from the handball class offered at UNM. Former research biology professor Carl White coaches the team.
After a 1-1 draw with Wyoming on Friday, the UNM women’s soccer team shot down Air Force with a 4-1 win.
It wasn’t a pretty finish, but a win is a win. After putting away six goals on Friday in its 6-0 win over Denver University, UNM could only muster a one-point victory as it beat Air Force 1-0 yesterday, to take them to 11-0-2 for the season. The only goal came in the first half as senior Lance Rozeboom was taken down in the box and converted the penalty kick. “I am proud of the guys for grinding it out,” Rozeboom said.
The men’s basketball team’s performance in the MWC conference last year was forgettable, yet it must have made an impression on someone.

Saturday night may have been windy and chilly, but the UNM women’s soccer team fought through it and beat UNLV 1-0. Senior Jennifer Williams got to celebrate her birthday Saturday by scoring the only goal of the night in the 10th minute.
The UNM men’s soccer team is once again among the nation’s elite programs. In the last few years, the Lobos have had some great team lineups but have not lived up to their hype.
In the fifth and final set against San Diego State, the UNM volleyball team needed just one more point to take the win, but it came too late. The Lobos lost by 16-25, 25-23, 27-25, 21-25, 15-17 Sunday afternoon at Johnson Center, after having five consecutive match-points go to waste.
The UNM women’s soccer team has the chance to put an inconsistent season behind it when it faces UNLV on Saturday. The Lobos took a nose dive midway through the season after they lost three games in a row, but they bounced back with a four game unbeaten streak, including three wins and a tie to San Diego State University (SDSU) last week.
The UNM volleyball team has 11 games left in its regular season, and there’s still one starting position to fill. This season, the Lobos have been shuffling through players trying to find the perfect complement to middle blocker Ashley Rhoades in the attack. “We’re really struggling in the outside hitting position in terms of people stepping up and being consistent,” head coach Jeff Nelson said.
The UNM men’s and women’s cross country teams finished eighth and third, respectively, at last Friday’s Notre Dame Invitational in Southbend, Ind. The teams dropped in this week’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll.
