New additions, luck leads to late game win

A Lobo soccer’s redshirt freshman, Rollie scored his first goal in his first appearance for the Lobos during their 2-0 win Friday night over Towson, the first game of the season, in front of over 2,000 fans.

Cornhuskers shuck front-court defense

The Lobos beat the University of South Florida in three of four games, 27-29, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21 on Friday night in the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic at Johnson Center. The next night, Nebraska, the fifth-ranked team in the nation, beat the Lobos in three games, 25-16, 25-17, 25-17.

Off again, on again fan love

The relationship between Ronnie and Sammi, the show’s token on-again, off-again, melodramatic couple, is a lot like the one between UNM football head coach Mike Locksley and Lobo fans.

Top athletes, coaches honored

Among the inductees honored by the UNM Alumni Lettermen’s Association, at The Pit, were brothers Alan and Loren Dils, James Economides, Nao Ikeda, Ron Jacobsen, Guy Wimberly and Jack McFarland, who was inducted posthumously.

For most teams, making it to the NCAA tournament almost every year would be a reason to celebrate, but not for the Lobos. UNM has been a perennial national powerhouse since head coach Jeremy Fishbein took the helm in 2001, and the team has made the NCAA tournament five times in the past six years.

Iowan leads team to battle
August 24Lobo Men’s soccer midfielder Lance Rozeboom has done his fair share of traveling, but this will be his last season traveling with the UNM men’s soccer team. Hailing from Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Rozeboom logged six starts as a true freshman and has been a multiple all-conference teamer (both first and second team) in the past two years.

Williams hopes to lead her team to a second Mountain West Conference championship and an NCAA tournament bid for the second straight year. “Our goals for this season are to make it to the NCAA tournament again and to go as far as we can,” she said.

Nathan Farmer | August 22Dominating in every stat does not always lead to victory. The UNM women’s soccer team tied Saint Mary’s 1-1 in overtime on Friday after controlling much of the game and out-shooting the Gaels 26-16 in its regular season opener.

Looking to net MWC win

In 2010, for the second straight season, the Lobos finished with a 20-10 record and earned a bid into the NCAA tournament. Both times UNM did not make it past the first round, but head coach Jeff Nelson said he hopes the third time is the charm. “We’ve got to start moving forward,” he said.

Keeping up with a winning streak
Cesar Davila | August 15Take it nationally. That’s what Joe Franklin’s cross country team intends to do. After back-to-back sweeps in 2009-10 at the MWC Championships and the NCAA regionals, the Lobos are galloping toward a three-peat, but are more preoccupied with winning a national title. Franklin, the 2010 NCAA Mountain Region Coach of the Year, said how quickly the team adjusts to losing 10 seniors will determine how successful it will be.
