UNM head football coach Mike Locksley shouts from the sidelines at University Stadium during the Lobos 52-17 loss to Texas Tech on Saturday.

Mental lapses lead to blowout

Last updated: 09/13/10 1:18am

Hope quickly disappeared into the Albuquerque night at University Stadium on Saturday.

The UNM football team dropped its home opener to Texas Tech, 52-17, in large part due to a plethora of turnovers, dropped passes, penalties and quick scores by the opposition.

The Red Raiders opened with a 21-point assault in the first quarter — each touchdown scored under one minute of overall possession. Tech’s first three drives, on average, were 27.7 yards and took about 27 seconds each.

UNM head coach Mike Locksley said the Lobos’ 35-point loss is unacceptable, and it shouldn’t sit well with his players.
“I hope they feel sick,” he said. “I hope that they are sick to their stomachs.”

Aside from the ailing special teams’ performance, the Lobos allowed Texas Tech to score only 45 seconds into the contest. Quarterback Taylor Potts hit Austin Zouzalic for a 55-yard touchdown pass for a quick 7-0 lead.

The Lobos allowed two blocked punts. On the Lobos’ first offensive possession, Aaron Crawford busted through UNM’s punt protection and blocked a Ben Skaer kick.

The ball bounced to the UNM three-yard line and Jonathan Brydon recovered. One play later, Texas Tech tailback Eric Stephens ran it in from three yards out.

“It’s just a matter of guys taking care of their assignments and doing their job,” Locksley said, referring to the punt block. “I mean, when it’s a one-man rush and he splits the wedge, then we have got to get somebody else in there to take care of their responsibility.”
The punt-blocking blunders weren’t the Lobos’ only missed duties. The kickoff team gave up 175 total yards on kickoff returns, including a 93-yard kickoff return. The Raiders scored two plays later for a 21-3 advantage.

“You want your special teams to make big plays,” Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. “I mean, we blocked two punts and (had) very good kickoff return. I thought the field position was just unbelievable for the offense.”

In the second quarter, UNM quarterback B.R. Holbrook had the offense clicking on almost all cylinders.

UNM cut the Red Raiders’ lead to 31-17 with 55 seconds left in the first half, when Holbrook scampered for an 11-yard run. Holbrook was drilled and lost the ball, but wide receiver Chris Hernandez scooped up the football and ran 45 yards for a touchdown.

Holbrook finished with his first career 300-yard passing game (323), but threw two game-altering interceptions in the second half.
The Lobos committed 16 penalties for 145 yards, including two that eliminated a Lucas Reed 15-yard touchdown reception before the end of the first half.

Holbrook said the Lobos had too many mental mistakes, despite mentality being an area they emphasized heading into Saturday’s matchup.
“We had way too many penalties,” he said. “It seems like we would take two steps forward and one step back.”

Not masking his frustration, Locksley said the Lobos were prepared for Saturday’s game and he doesn’t understand why areas they worked on in practice don’t transfer over to the game.

“I am very disappointed in the showing that we’ve had the last couple of weeks, and we’re going to find a way to get it right,” he said.

Hey Coach we have been very disappointed in the showing that you’ve had starting last season.

You SUCK.

You are an overpaid embarrassment who commands little respect from his team and even less from the UNM community.

750,000 dollars a year for this nonsense?

You’re unacceptable Locksley this is a direct result of your poor coaching Mr.HC and poor leadership.

What does Locksley expect out of the guys; it seems pretty obvious to me that there is a coaching problem at work here. He needs to accept that fact and quit blaming everything on the players.

Really really depressing. I don;t know if we will win a game at all this year. If we go 1-11 again what will we do? I think the last time we were rankled at all was 1980.

Come on Locks. You can’t be that stupid, oh wait you ARE. Its the same thing in the classroom when a teacher says, “I taught them very well yet I don’t understand why EVERY student is getting a D” uhh maybe its YOUR style. not the way the players learn from practice or carry that over to the game. Sports has a direct corelation to practice showing up on gameday. Clearly you need to revamp your practice.

as far as the game went, I gave the Lobos some slack when the played Oregon. They were nationally ranked and I expected us to do poorly. It wasn’t until i actually watched the game saturday that I realized how pathetic we actually look. I have seen some high school teams that look more put together than we do.

Another loss – some surprise. He revealed himself for what he is when he punched his assistant. Since the AD didn’t get rid of him then, they both should go. Lobo fans deserve much better than this.

Wow, and to think, we had the perfect oportunity to release him without payment. Now, it will cost us to buy him out like Rocky Long. Remember that boone doggle? We are still paying for that.

There were about 22,000 people for Texas Tech game-that is how many people go to a high school football game in Texas. We complain about Coach Locks getting paid $750,000- but powerhouse coaches in college football get paid over a million dollars. I am not by any stetch saying he is a powerhouse coach-because UNM isn’t a powerhouse- but let’s face it, unfortunately UNM doesn’t have the funds or the support to be a football school. We are at the bottom of the pack in a non bcs conference. Rumors have been floating around for the past couple of months that TCU might be joining the BIG 12 (with Arkansas)-which doesn’t look good for the Mountain West Conference at all.

I’m looking forward to basketball season

You know…I keep hearing about how the Lobos are “Developing Young Players” or the old “Who would want to come here to play?” and you know, these arguments are cop outs.

The coach of any team that wants to compete shouldn’t coddle their players. Develop? No. You play. You play NOW. That’s why you came here, right?

And who would want to come here? Any football player who wants to compete in a DI program against other DI schools, which by some miracle, we still are. That’s how you get noticed by NFL scouts. I mean, what are you going to do? Play at Ohio State or Stanford and warm the bench for three years before they consider starting you? (Whatever, Lucky-Arse Tom Brady) Or are you going to man up, come to UNM and represent (like good ole’ Urlacher)?

Hit someone in the mouth (on the field, not in meetings). We need some toughness out there. Some throwbacks. Not this Bull Dookey Locksley’s churning out by the barrel.

I’m out.

Wow, what a bunch of whiners. Do you really expect for a new system to come in and win every game from day 1? Have any of you folks posting here ever played football?

I was at the game, watched the whole game, didn’t leave at halftime like some of you. The Lobos looked pretty good most of the time – 23 first downs, 433 net yards. Were you watching that same game? Time of possession 33:41 minutes, that is good folks.

Yeah, the Special teams did a lousy job. Yeah, Lobos had waaaay too many penalties. But those are things that can be fixed. If you compare TT game with the game with the Ducks = HUGE improvements. I suggest you whiners go buy a ticket to the games, and then watch the team play. They are playing hard. I expect them to win several games this year if they continue to improve as much as they have from Game 1 to Game 2.

As far as Coach Locksley goes, I am starting to become a fan. I can see his plan starting to come together. I am giving him a until the end of this season.

@ Romeo

I agree with someone coming to UNM to play division I football-but, what have we got to sell the recruit? For starters, we don’t have the fan base. The University Stadium capacity is only about 30,000 and never sells out. There is also a lack of tradition here. Plus, the grass is greener in other states (Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Lousiana, Florida, Nebraska, California)-they actually have grass and not rock lawns-but also, they have traditions, rivalries, money, and in conferences like the BIG 12, SEC, ACC-they get ample TV coverage. I know it sounds like I am bad mouthing my school-I love UNM-but it falls short when it comes to the “big boy” football programs. I think UNM would be much happier as an FCS school where we could compete on our level and win a lot more games. Like I said in a comment earlier-with Utah and BYU leaving and rumors floating around that TCU might go to BIG 12-Mountain West is done (even with Boise State).

I think robint is either Locksley or Locksley’s mother. Although I did hear this older gentlman in the Del Norte Locker room talking about what great athletes the UNM lobo team has just this last Sunday. This proves a couple of things:
1.) Lobo fans are not fair weather fans, in fact they don’t care one way or the other.
2.) It takes much more than a group of athletes to make a winning football team. Things like discipline, skill, team work, loyalty, mutual support, etc.

Locksley himself settles disputes by punching, choking and insolence, not a best leader or role model for impressionable young men. Fire the coach and get someone with a reputation for intellect and discipline.

Perhaps Schmid should take over the football coaching duties. He can instruct on the finer points of evading, passing (the buck), and hitting.
