While I agree with Brad Lord-Leutwyler that, for the most part, sports celebrities are not to be mistaken for heroes and that his letter should serve as a call to arms against Webster’s Dictionary — the editors advocate the synonomy of ‘ensure’ and ‘insure’ — I cannot deny the rage that springs from reading his Feb. 22 column.
Any person worthy of invoking one of Scotland’s finest exports ought to know that the letter “H” does not appear in the name Macallan. Further, the preferred method of enjoying this whisky (notice the lack of an “E” when referring to the Scottish variety) is as a neat dram — a far cry from what Americans call a “straight shot.” While these may be conceptually the same, the difference is one of not only vocabulary but also attitude.
