REVIEW: Albuquerque production ‘Coyote vs Acme’ blasts into theaters

The long-awaited Looney Toons feature “Coyote vs. Acme” released in theatres nationwide on Aug. 28, after being filmed for HBO Max in 2022 then later shelved by its distributor, Warner Bros. Pictures, as a tax write-off in November 2023. Online backlash led to the film being picked up by indie distributor Ketchup Entertainment and eventually released as a feature film. The film earned $15.5 million dollars in its opening weekend, making it the best opening weekend in its distributor’s history. The film has now earned $33 million dollars in the U.S. and is awaiting a full international release.

Flood control authority accused of burying wildlife during drainage operation

Employees from the Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority were accused of burying animals alive at a site along the Rio Grande this week in a Facebook post by a page belonging to the Volunteers of the Valencia County Animal Shelter. Witnesses Angela Shomin and Brittany Walters say they encountered AMAFCA workers pumping the La Orilla Outlet Water Quality Structure dry and filling it with dirt on Tuesday, suffocating the animals that called the basin home, according to the post. On Wednesday morning, volunteers came to the site with nets and buckets to catch any wildlife left in the basin.

Local Artists shine in Albuquerque's first ever ‘Art Battle’

Salad Bowl America, a cultural magazine and foundation, organized an “Art Battle” competition on Sunday, Aug. 16 at the Valle De Luna Event Center, consisting entirely of local artists, with six of them participating in one round and another six participating in the second round. Three winners were chosen from each round to compete in the final, from which a single victor was chosen. In contrast to a standard art showcase, this competition decided to be more colorful. The battle had contestants paint on stage in front of bidders, rather than painting prior to the event. The competition also gave artists 15 minutes to set up and 20 minutes to paint.

Women’s Soccer: Lobos fall 3-1 to Gonzaga

Coming off of a win against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, the New Mexico Lobos were back at home to take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs for the second game of the women’s soccer season Sunday afternoon. Gonzaga would go on to defeat the Lobos 3-1. Neither side gave any leeway during the first half, with the score sitting at 0-0 at the break. That quickly changed when Gonzaga forward Samantha Snorksy scored in the 49th minute with an assist from midfielder Amelia Severn.

EA rolls back College Football 27 video game microtransactions after player backlash

Video game publisher EA Sports announced Friday that it will be removing paid progression microtransactions in the College Football 27 Dynasty and Road to Glory modes. This decision was made after some players boycotted the game as a form of protest until EA Sports removed the feature. Since the game’s release, players have scrutinized the company for this, since previous iterations of College Football did not require you to pay to progress in a single player, offline mode.

Basketball: Knicks Defeat Spurs To Win First NBA Title In 53 Years

This year’s NBA Finals were an exhilarating ride, with the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs neck-and-neck at pivotal moments during the five games played. The Spurs led by double digits at some point in every game, yet they could not stave off the Knicks. The Knicks’ appearance in the finals ended a 27-year drought of early endings to their season, and their Game 5 win ended a 53-year title drought.
