UNM Awards Two Athletes

Former UNM football player Daniel Reyes and current women's basketball team member Nikki Heckroth are the recipients of the 1999-2000 L.F. "Tow" Diehm and Leslie Self Inspirational Awards.

The awards are presented annually to UNM male and female student-athletes and are based on the students' leadership, character, determination and commitment to the team. The awards were established in 1997 and named after Diehm, who served as the UNM head athletic trainer and athletics administrator for 40 years, and Self, who was the wife of former UNM Lobo Club President Randy Self.

Reyes and Heckroth will be honored before the UNM men's basketball team's game tonight against the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, with Randy Self and Pearl Diehm, wife of Tow, on hand to present the awards.

The UNM women's golf team shot a third-round score of 319 Wednesday to finish in 17th place in the TRW Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif. The 18-team field featured 15 teams ranked in the MasterCard Top 25 rankings.

The highest UNM finisher was senior Ryley Webb, who was 49th with a three-day total of 234, 22-over par. Freshman Kristi Larsen and senior Elisa Kase finished tied for 58th place, with each shooting 237. Junior Claudia Fellini finished 64th and senior Britney Holt ended up 89th.

The University of Arizona won the team title for the second straight year, with its 32-over par 884, edging out New Mexico State University by 11 strokes.

UNM shot a 307 on the first day of competition to put it in sixth place overall, but its second round score of 317 and Wednesday's effort dropped it to 17th place.

Junior Amanda Carson broke the UNM record in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 56.58 seconds. It was Carson's first UNM record and the second UNM record broken by this year's team. Junior Quinn Michie broke her own record in the 200-meter individual medley earlier this year.

Carson had three top-10 finishes, including a sixth-place finish in the 200-meter butterfly, a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly and an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter individual medley.

Colburn's fourth-place time in the 1650-meter freestyle was the highest finish for UNM in any event. She also finished 11th in the 400-meter individual medley and the 500-meter freestyle event.

Michie, despite being sick with the flu, turned in a ninth-place finish in the 200-meter individual medley and finished 12th in the 100-meter backstroke, while senior Jaala Joslin earned 12th place in the 400-meter individual medley and took 16th place in the 200-meter breaststroke.
