Editor,
I am writing in response to Jamie Seiberlich’s column on Thursday about Title IX and “common sense” about women and sports.
It’s hard to believe that, in 2001, a column such as this was allowed to be published in a university newspaper. It is especially disturbing that it was printed in the same issue featuring the UNM women’s basketball team on the front page.
Seiberlich’s “facts” that men are more athletic, stronger, faster and more aggressive are ridiculous and based only on centuries-old stereotypes and sexist generalizations.
The same is true for his claims that women do not attend or enjoy sporting events, advocates of Title IX are “militant feminists” and men are getting screwed over. These claims are apparently based on his personal experience playing and watching men’s rugby.
I don’t know what kind of experience Seiberlich’s has had with women, but I would guess it’s not very much.
