Sports in brief

Women’s Basketball

Sophomore center Jordan Adams has accepted an invitation to the 2001 USA Basketball National Team Trials, which will be held May 18-21.

Adams will participate in the trials to determine the 12 women who will play on the United States women’s team. Thirty-six of the top collegiate basketball players, including 13 All-Americans, will battle to see who will represent their country in the World University Games, which is held every two years. The Games will be held in Beijing, China from Aug. 22-Sept. 1.

This past season, Adams led the Lobos in scoring and blocks shots. She averaged 14.4 points and three blocks per game. She finished fifth nationally in blocked shots per game. She was a second-team all-Mountain West Conference selection.

Senior Takeshi Itoh was selected as a singles player to the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships May 22-23 held at Athens, Ga.

Itoh becomes the 14th player in UNM history and the third in as many years to compete in the championships.

Itoh compiled a 22-9 record this year in singles competition and was named to the Mountain West All-Conference team. The wins included two wins over ranked opponents in his last two matches.

Softball

The UNM softball team swept a key conference series on Friday and split a series against its upcoming conference tournament foe.

On Sunday, the Lobos split a two-game series against San Diego State University. UNM lost the first game 1-0 in nine innings and then rebounded to win the second game 1-0.

On Friday, the Lobos swept a doubleheader from UNLV, 4-2 and 6-0. The sweep gave the Lobos fourth place in the conference.

In game one, the score was even at two before the Lobos scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore Kelly Glass went three-for-three with one RBI and one run scored. In the second game, UNM exploded for two runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth inning. That is all the run support Amy Dumas needed as she pitched seven shutout innings, allowing only five hits.

Baseball

The UNM baseball team won two of three games against the University of Nevada at Las Vegas this weekend.

The Lobos scored runs in the ninth in both victories to win the series.

After losing the first game 7-5, UNM rebounded by scoring two runs in the ninth to get the 7-5 victory. With the score tied at five, sophomore shortstop Dusty Young walked, stole second and then scored on a double by second baseman Troy Cairns. Cairns later scored on an error. In the rubber game, the Lobos exploded for four runs in the ninth to win 9-5. Kris Gross came in relief and got the victory, improving his record to 2-4.

Track & Field

The UNM track and field team had one of its finest performances of the season in the University of Texas-Arlington Open Saturday. Three Lobos finished in first place in their respective competitions.

Junior Arline Smith and seniors Lisa Coleman and Ian Stewart each won for the Lobos in their final regular season meet of the year.

On the women’s side, Smith won her second race of the outdoor season, capturing the 200 meters in a season best time of 24.18. Coleman earned her third victory of the year in the 444-meter hurdles. UNM also swept the top four spots in that event.

On the men’s side, Stewart won the 400 meters with a season best time of 47.42.
