Editor’s defense of ‘Our Lady’ superficial

Editor,

I was disappointed with your editorial in the June 14-20 edition of the Daily Lobo regarding Alma L¢pez’s piece of garbage that depicts the Virgin Mary in a bikini.

I, too, am Catholic and the Church I know teaches that the Trinity is to be glorified, the Blessed Virgin revered and the saints and martyrs respected as holy role models to be emulated.

Were you to look more deeply at your church, you would find these things too. Unless of course you attend the Church of “What’s Happenin’ Now,” where it’s OK to believe as you want, when you want, as long as it doesn’t infringe on your life. After all, isn’t one’s self esteem more important than God? I think not.

You say the Catholic “faith is based on the rebellion of one leader who refused to toe the company line.” What a flippant description of the Christ who died for you. It sounds more like a photo caption depicting Microsoft and Bill Gates.

You write, “Those who cling to the image of the virgin also have forgotten what she represents ... ” Why do you think they’re upset? They remember their faith, which teaches that the Virgin is humility, purity and virtue in the highest form. They’re outraged at the insult to her, hurt by the public debasement of the mother of Christ.

In your editorial, you have fallen into the same trap as many who argue the superficial — you cry freedom of speech over the propriety of speech. You look at what is legal, not what is moral.

Morals still do exist, even though at times it is difficult to understand how.

It is legal for Alma L¢pez to depict Mary, the Mother of God, in a bikini. In my opinion and others who dislike it, it is immoral for her to do so. End of story. Why is this so hard to digest?

Frankly, we are tired of those things we hold sacred being trashed on a daily basis. We are tired of political correctness winning out over ethics and common sense.

We are tired of hypocritical editorials like yours, which state, “I am secure enough in my faith to understand what the Virgin of Guadalupe means to me and respect others’ right to believe differently.”

Dear editor, obviously you aren’t — and you don’t.
