Editor,
With the latest allegations of rape on fraternity row, it is time to once again examine the issue of safety on campus, particularly as it effects women.
UNM Police Lt. Omtvedt advises that women “not put themselves in situations where they increase the possibility of harm for themselves or their friends.” He explains, “they need to be careful who they associate with and what parties they attend.”
This statement, along with being a classic example of “blame the victim,” demonstrates that the police themselves do not regard fraternity houses or fraternity parties as safe places for women.
Our Dean of Students Randy Boeglin adds: “These incidents tell me some work still needs to be done.”
Or maybe these broken, unsafe houses are beyond repair and need to be torn down.
