Editorial: Involvement key to fun college experience

The fall semester is officially under way, and I will be one of many people on campus this week encouraging students to learn about all that UNM has to offer.

Your college experience will be as fun as you make it. I have worked at the Daily Lobo for the last three years and have seen first-hand that countless opportunities are available for students.

The Associated Students of UNM supports a seemingly endless list of student organizations that include the Ultimate Frisbee Club, Ayn Rand Objectivist Club, Trailblazers, Black Student Union, Campus Crusade for Christ, the Nontraditional Student Association and Conceptions Southwest to name a few. Then you have fraternities, sororities and residence hall associations.

Some of these are truly academic entities, while others are among the most unorthodox groups you will ever find.

After covering these groups for so long, I know they represent just about every type of interest possible. If you don’t find one that fits your needs and can find three other people to join you, you can form your own organization with student government support.

While I have taken many great classes and many others I would like to forget, the best education I have gained at UNM came from working at the Daily Lobo. The student newspaper is the independent voice of UNM that is produced weekly during the summer and daily during the fall and spring semesters.

The Daily Lobo welcomes and encourages all student participation — whether you choose to work here, write letters to the editor or read the newspaper. More than 100 students work at the newspaper and gain invaluable experience, have a good time and earn money. We still have numerous job openings in nearly every department and don’t turn away students who are willing to work hard and learn.

I encourage all of you to find the group that fits your needs and get involved. It could make the difference between an average college experience and one you won’t ever forget.
