Alumni Association plans week of events

Activities range from silent auction to Route 66 sock hop

The UNM Alumni Association is celebrating "Coming Home on Route 66" this week during UNM's 76th annual homecoming, which includes six days of activities and more than 35 separate events.

All events lead up to the homecoming football game when UNM takes on Air Force on Saturday.

The festivities kick off with student-oriented events Monday through Wednesday.

The induction of the Class of 1951 into the Heritage Club will be the highlight of the Heritage Club dinner at the Albuquerque Petroleum Club at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The Fiesta 66 Soc Hop features an evening of music and dancing under the big tent at University Stadium on Friday from 8 to 10 p.m. A costume contest for the best-dressed Route 66 look will also be held at the dance.

Events for Saturday include the All University Breakfast, UNM Alumni Lettermen's Tailgate Party, Fiesta 66 and the eighth annual UNM Alumni Association Silent Auction. Proceeds from the sale of root beer floats at Fiesta 66 will benefit the Red Cross disaster relief fund.

Other highlights for homecoming include the annual UNM faculty and staff alumni luncheon, annual Cherry and Silver Competition, UNM Bookstore Party, affinity group reunions, student activities, UNM Foundation Lunch Seminar and much more.

The schedule of events, including contact names and numbers for each event, is as follows:

Monday

Route 66 Banner & Residence Hall Decorating Contest. Be creative, using any materials. Banners will be on display at the Student Union Building fence. The Residence Halls are also sponsoring a dorm decorating contest. Students should contact their resident adviser (RA) for more information.

Tuesday

6 p.m. The annual campus walk begins in the UNM College of Education Room 103.

Wednesday

All day UNM Bookstore Sidewalk Sale 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Students will vote on UNM Homecoming Royalty and choose their favorite King and Queen candidate. 11:30 a.m. University of New Mexico Faculty and Staff Alumni Luncheon during which current UNM faculty and staff employees who are UNM alumni are invited to Carrabba's Italian Grill for an appreciation lunch. Thursday

UNM Bookstore Sidewalk Sale Students continue the tradition of the Annual Cherry/Silver Competition to attain the coveted prize cup. Students will compete in numerous games including the Lobo Howl. Call the Student Activities Office at 277-4706 for more information. 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The UNM Foundation will offer a lunch at Zimmerman Library and will provide information about getting the most from new tax laws. Contact Trudy Lee at 277-4503. 6 p.m. The Heritage Club Dinner for alumni and friends who have been out of the University 50 years or more. The induction of the Class of 1951 will highlight the evening at the Albuquerque Petroleum Club.

Friday

All Day UNM Bookstore Sidewalk Sale All Day Lobo Spirit Day: UNM community is asked to wear cherry UNM T-shirts on campus to show Lobo pride. 9 a.m. The 1975-76 UNM football team will participate in a round of golf to mark the 25th anniversary since the end of the '75-'76 season. The event will be celebrated at Arroyo del Oso Golf Course. Contact Steve Ciepiela at 884-0451 or Kim Feldman at 277-9092 for more information. 10:30 a.m. The class of 1951 will be having its reunion brunch. Members of the class of 1951 and their guests will gather at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology. Call 277-5808 for more information. 12-2 p.m. The UNM Bookstore is having its annual homecoming party. Festivities include live entertainment, food and a sidewalk sale. 5-8 p.m. The University Honors Program alumni are invited to an open house and reception at the program's new location in University College. For more information, call 277-4211. 5-8 p.m. Kappa Sigma Fraternity, 1825 Sigma Chi Rd. NE, will have an open house. Contact Steve Archibeque at 841-5149 or Doug Cochran at 440-1386 for more information. 6:30 p.m. Sigma Alpha Epsilon, 1811 Mesa Vista Rd. NE, will be having a homecoming reception. For more information, contact Joe Quintana at 883-1478. 6-7 p.m. The Foundation for Jewish Life on Campus will host a Jewish Alumni Reception to welcome the Sabbath at the Hillel House, 1701 Sigma Chi Rd., NE. Contact Janet Gaines at 277-4511 for more information. 6-9 p.m. The UNM Alumni Lettermen Annual Meeting and Social will be held at the President's Pavilion in the Tow Diehm Athletic Complex, University Stadium. Naval ROTC: 277-3744 6 p.m. Past Student Government Leaders: Debbie Morris, 277-4706 6-8 p.m. Fiesta 66 Reunions: Several affinity groups will gather under the Big Tent at University Stadium for a fun-filled evening of reuniting old friendships, music, dancing and refreshments.

UNM Young Alumni Association: A new constituency group open to those who have graduated within the last 15 years. Contact Yvonne Pena at 277-3361.

College of Education is welcoming alumni and encouraging them to share ideas about what's been happening in the education field. Contact Margaret Duran at 277-0835.

College of Engineering also will hold its annual alumni reception. Contact Debbie Dobson at 277-5539.

UNM School of Law will gather under the Fiesta 66 Big Tent. Contact Herb Wright at 277-1038. 8-10 p.m. FIESTA 66 "SOC HOP": An evening of music and dancing under the Big Tent at University Stadium. The event includes a costume contest for the best-dressed Route 66 look.

Saturday

9 a.m. The All University Breakfast recognizes the accomplishments of New Mexico resident alumni through the presentation of the Zia Awards as well as Mortar Board Lobo Award 9 a.m. UNM School of Architecture and Planning is offering an alumni reception, then a walking tour of campus with Steve Borbas at 10 a.m. The First annual Alumni Association meeting will follow the event at 12 noon. 12-2 p.m. Chi Omega is holding its alumnae open house at 1810 Mesa Vista Rd. NE. Contact Ellen Peabody at 842-5099.

Pre-Game

Alpha Chi Omega is holding its alumnae open house at 1635 Mesa Vista Rd. NE. Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Open House: Join Pi Beta Phi Alumnae for an Open House at 1701 Mesa Vista Rd. NE, prior to the football game. Eta Kappa Alpha Tau Omega alumni are having a potluck tailgate two hours before the football game. The group will meet in the east lot of University Stadium. Look for the lightpole with the "E" sign on it. Contact Dave Dallas at 237-9098. Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity is holding a tailgate party in the UNM Tailgate Lot, northeast of the Football Stadium. Contact Christian Navarro (713) 222-2252. For information about the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Alumni Tailgate Party, contact Joe Quintana at 883-1478. The Kappa Sigma fraternity will have its own tailgate party and encourages alumni to join the group by looking for the fraternity flag in the tailgate parking lot. UNM Alumni Lettermen's Tailgate Party: This event will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1975-76 UNM Football Team. The lettermen's tent is in the tailgate lot northeast of the UNM Football Stadium. Contact Kim Feldman at 277-9088. The Alumni Association is sponsoring Fiesta 66, which it is touting as the biggest tailgate party under one giant tent. The group will offer a New Mexican buffet, live mariachi music and more in the giant tent in the tailgate parking lot northeast of the football stadium. During the same event, the group will hold the Eighth Annual UNM Alumni Silent Auction. 4 p.m. UNM Lobos vs. Air Force Falcons: Cheer on the Lobos in what is sure to be an exciting Mountain West Conference football game. Half-time festivities include the presentation of the Homecoming Queen and King and an extravaganza by the UNM Band.
