Plenty of events offered for students

While homecoming is always about alumni, the Student Activities Office and ASUNM's Homecoming Committee have lined up a week full of events for students.

Monday, the groups are sponsoring a Route 66 Banner and Residence Hall Decorating Contest. Banners will be on display at the SUB fence.

Students interested in the dorm decorating contest should contact their residence adviser.

Tuesday, the groups are sponsoring the bi-annual Campus Safety Walk. Students are invited to tour the campus to help find areas in need of light and safety maintenance.

Attendance is rewarded with points in the Cherry/Silver competition.

The event begins in the College of Education Room 103 at 7 p.m.

Wednesday will be the king and queen elections. Students can vote for their favorite candidates at Dane Smith Hall and the Student Residence Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Thursday are the Lobo Howl and Route 66 games.

Students are encouraged to compete for prizes and points in the Cherry/Silver Competition. The event runs from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the Duck Pond.

Due to construction, this year's student events' organizers dropped the annual parade of lights from the schedule, but have added a pep rally and carnival at the Duck Pond Friday.

The University community is encouraged to wear school colors and attend the all sports pep rally from noon to 1 p.m. Student organizations will provide carnival-style entertainment from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Homecoming organizers also are inviting the community to a sock hop and soccer game Friday.

The sock hop will be at the tent north of University Stadium from 8 -11 p.m.

The event includes a costume contest, live '50s-style band and root beer floats.

Participants are encouraged to bring their Lobo ID and a pair of new socks for admission.

Prior to the event, people are encouraged to cheer on the women's team at the UNM Soccer Complex at 7 p.m.

On Saturday students can participate in a seemingly endless stream of tailgate parties that begin two hours before the 4 p.m. kickoff of the football game against the Air Force Academy. The homecoming court coronation will be at halftime.
