Sports in brief

The UNM women's soccer team looks to continue its winning ways in the Mountain West Conference when it hits the road for two games this weekend.

The Lobos (2-8-2, 1-0-1 in the Mountain West) started conference play with a win and a tie last weekend. They now face Brigham Young University Friday and the University of Utah Sunday, two teams the Lobos have never beaten on the road.

The Cougars (8-4-1, 2-0) are in first place in the conference and the three-time conference champions have won 10 straight conference games. The Cougars lead the conference in almost every category, including goals scored with 27 and the fewest goals allowed with an average of 1.08 per game.

Utah is 4-0 at home this season and is second in the conference in goals scored with 26.

The Lobos (3-6-2, 0-1-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) have not scored a goal in 274 minutes and have yet to win a conference game in two tries.

UNM will try to end those streaks when it plays the Air Force Academy Friday and Denver University Sunday.

It will be the second meeting between the Lobos and Air Force (9-2, 2-0) this season. On Oct. 7, the Falcons swooped in and beat the Lobos at home 2-1. The first half of that game was the last time the Lobos scored a goal.

Sunday the Lobos take on the Denver Pioneers (6-4-3, 0-2-0), who were ranked 25th in the nation earlier in the season.

The UNM volleyball team will be looking for revenge when it starts the second half of its Mountain West Conference schedule this weekend.

The Lobos (3-13, 1-6 in the Mountain West) play San Diego State University Friday and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas Saturday. Both teams beat the Lobos in three sets earlier this season.

SDSU (10-6, 4-3) is a very tall team that provides the shorter Lobos with some height disadvantages.

Saturday the Lobos battle UNLV, with the overall series tied at four apiece.

The UNM women's golf team will compete in the Stanford Invitational this weekend with a new ranking and more confidence.

The Lobos started the season unranked but are now ranked seventh in the nation. They also have four players ranked in the top 100 in the country.

The event consists of 18 holes played each day and a field of seven teams ranked in the top-25. The Lobos finished in 10th place in the same tournament last season.
