Sports in brief

Three members of the UNM women's tennis team will be looking to represent the Lobos well when they participate in the International Tennis Association Omni Regionals this weekend.

Sophomores Sandy Lukowski and Tjasa Suvak and freshman Michelle Heidbrink are set to play in the tournament in Tulsa, Okla.

Suvak is the 13th seed in the 64-player draw. She looks to continue her impressive play during the fall season, posting a 7-1 singles record.

Lukowski and Heidbrink will play both singles and doubles. They are 2-1 in doubles play so far this season.

The UNM men's tennis team had a mix of good and bad play this week in the Omni Hotel Region VII Tennis Championships.

The Lobos had six of the top-22 ranked players heading into the tournament, which started Wednesday and runs through to Sunday.

UNM started out Wednesday with a bang, winning five of six matches to advance to the third round of play. The Lobos continued its dominance in the third round, winning all four of their matches to advance to the fourth round. However, many of the Lobos met their match in the fourth round as they lost three matches with one remaining.

The UNM swimming and diving team starts its season Saturday when it splashes into action against Northern Arizona University.

The young Lobos look to improve on a 5-5 record last season, including 1-4 in the Mountain West Conference.

The UNM men's soccer team looks for its first conference win of the season when it hits the road for two games this weekend.

The Lobos started the season strong, but have faded in conference play. The Lobos are 3-8-2 and 0-3-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

UNM travels to take on Sacramento State University Friday and San Diego State University Sunday.
