Women's soccer has win, loss

The UNM women's soccer team had an emotional trip this weekend when it split a pair of road games in Utah.

The Lobos (3-9-2, 2-1-1) beat three-time conference champion Brigham Young University 1-0 Friday to take first place in the conference, but then lost 2-0 to the University of Utah Sunday.

UNM staged a tremendous battle against BYU on Friday, shutting out the Cougars for the first time in 35 years. The Lobos ousted the Cougars for the first time ever on the road and for the first time since 1995. The loss ended the Cougars' 16-game conference winning streak.

The Lobos were outshot 15-3, but senior goalkeeper Shelly Hammock was unbeatable as she saved a career-high 14 shots in the game. The shutout was her 12th of her career, tying her for 2nd all-time.

After a scoreless first half, the Lobos scored just two minutes into the second half to shock the Cougars. Sophomore midfielder Erchen Theys received the ball and ripped a shot off the goal post. She gathered the rebound and fired a shot just past BYU senior goalkeeper Jennifer Waldron.

The excitement would completely turn around two days later when the Lobos took on Utah. UNM has never beaten the Utes on the road and nothing changed Sunday. Despite another outstanding performance by Hammock, the Utes were too much to handle. Hammock recorded 10 saves, but allowed a goal in the first and second half.

Midway through the first half, Utah forward Shauna Gerr-Bingham scored a goal when she received nice assists from teammates Katie Tate and Amy Kofoed. Gerr-Bingham would get her second goal of the game and seal the victory with just two minutes left in the game.

The Lobos will play their last home games of the season versus the University of Nevada at Las Vegas Oct. 26th and against San Diego State University Oct. 28th.
