Ski teams' showing solid

The UNM ski team had a solid showing in its first conference meet of the season this weekend, with the Alpine teams finishing in the top five in the slalom and giant slalom to secure fourth place overall in Bozeman, Mont.

The women's team placed second in the giant slalom on Friday and wrapped up a fifth place in the slalom. The men's team also had a strong showing in the giant slalom, finishing third, but struggled to finish fifth in the slalom Saturday in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association's first race of the season.

Sophomore Caroline Schicht led the way for the women's team in the giant slalom. She finished second with a time of 1 minute, 35 seconds. Other top finishers for the Lobo women were freshman Helena Woodrow in 10th-place (1:50:80) and sophomore Jennifer Delich in 13th-place (1:51:22).

The men's team was led by junior Henrik Motys, who finished third with a time of 1:42:76. The men's race was won by Nevada-Reno's Tommi Vierret, who finished in 1:41:74. Overall, the Lobo men finished in third place, behind Utah and Denver. Other top Lobo finishers were senior Fredrik Steen's (1:44:23) 10th-place finish and freshman Gottfried Schwarzmueller's (1:44:35) 12th-place finish.

In the slalom, sophomore Jennifer Delich's time of 1:30:02 was good enough for 6th-place. Other top Lobo women finishers were sophomore Caroline Schicht, who posted an 11th-place time of 1:31:62, and freshman Helena Woodrow, who placed 16th with a time of 1:32:61.

The men's alpine team was paced by junior Henrik Motys' time of 1:30:76 in the slalom, good enough for an 11th-place. The men's race was won by Utah's Pierre Olsson, who finished with a total time of 1:29:02. UNM managed two other top-20 finishers, freshman Gottfried Schwarz-mueller finished 14th with a time of 1:31:42, while junior Lars Bjorge placed 16th at 1:32:11.

The RMISA meet concludes Jan. 9-10 when the Nordic teams compete at Bohart Ranch, Mont.
