LETTER: 'Door jumping' endangers all

Editor,

I am writing this letter in hopes of abolishing the practice of "door jumping" in our school shuttles. Allow me to explain. Most of our shuttles come equipped with two doors. They're placed strategically, with one in front and one in the middle.

Apparently the bus designers planned that the passengers on the front half of the bus would come out the front doors, and the latter half would use the second set of doors. I think they would be appalled at the sight of what their design is actually being used for.

In many instances, I have witnessed people directly in front of the middle doors going backwards and using the middle doors in order to exit the bus more quickly. What they may not realize is this "door jumping" creates a serious imbalance; when the front of the bus is almost empty, the back is still occupied. The efficiency of the bus is reduced, which has an impact on the timeliness of the bus itself.

I ask all bus patrons to come to an agreement. If you are in front of the middle doors, please use the front doors. If you are behind the middle doors, by all means, use them. If we can all agree to this, I believe that everyone, especially the UNM bus riding community as a whole, will be much better off.
