Williams decides to remain with men's basketball team

The UNM men's basketball team received good news Monday when head coach Ritchie McKay announced that freshman forward Jamaal Williams has decided to stay with the program.

When McKay became the new head coach March 29, Williams expressed interest in transferring schools to play basketball.

Earlier this month, Williams was granted a release from his UNM scholarship, allowing him to pursue playing for another school.

"This is a great day for Lobo basketball, and for myself and the staff," McKay said in a University statement. "Jamaal Williams is the type of person we want representing our program. He is a terrific student and he has tremendous character.

"Obviously, his abilities on the basketball floor are special, as well. I'm anxious to have the opportunity to coach Jamaal for three more years."

Williams was the most effective Lobo freshman last season, playing in 28 games, including three starts.
