Newman's goal came 12 minutes into overtime in the Lobos' final exhibition match of the season.

The Lobos got off to a good start when freshman forward Ben Ashwill scored in the 11th minute of action.

However, UNM did have its chances to finish things in regulation.

"I thought we should have been able to capitalize more on our chances in the second half," said Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein in a press release. "We should have scored three or four times but we didn't convert."

Newman's goal lifted Fishbein to a victory over his former team. Fishbein had a 74-47 record coaching Fort Lewis from 1992-1998.

Sophmore Andrew Weber recorded the win in net making seven saves on eight shots. UNM combined for eight shots.

"We have played some tough exhibition games and we are improving with each game," Fishbein said. "Our guys were able to come through today, but we need to keep improving as a team to be ready for the regular season."

Last week, the Lobos beat Yavapai Junior College 2-0 at the UNM Soccer Complex.

Yavapai is ranked No. 2 in the NSCAA Junior College polls.

UNM begins the regular season on Friday when they face the Northern Illinois University in Las Vegas, Nev.

UNM's first home game is set for Friday, Sept. 13 against California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obitspo in the TLC Plumbing and Utility Invitational.
