The Mountain West Conference announced the results of its preseason men's and women's cross country poll Thursday.
UNM's men's team, which received 20 points, was picked to finish third in the conference by the league's coaches. That is the highest preseason ranking for the Lobos since the formation of the MWC in 1999. Colorado State University was picked to take first, Brigham Young University was picked to finish second.
The league's coaches picked UNM's women's team to finish fifth for the second-straight year. The Lobos received 32 points. Three-time champions BYU were picked to finish first on the women's side. CSU was picked to finish second.
Both cross country teams matched their preseason rankings with fifth place finishes at the 2001 MWC Championships in Albuquerque. In 2000, both squads were picked to finish last in the league with the men receiving just six points and the women earning 16. The women's team finished seventh that season, while the men finished sixth.
The women finished eighth in 1999. The men's team finished sixth in 1999.
This year the New Mexico men received 11 points in the MONDO Men's Cross Country Pre-Season poll, their first national votes since 1993.
