SPORTS IN BRIEF

The 2002-03 UNM men's and women's basketball teams will give eager fans a preview of the upcoming season Saturday at The Pit in the annual Lobo Howl. The Howl will follow the Lobo volleyball team's match against Colorado State University at about 8 p.m. An autograph session with team members will be held, as well as the men's slam-dunk competition and 3-point shootout for the women.

The Lobo men's tennis team returns home from a successful road trip to host the Balloon Fiesta Invitational Oct. 11-13 at the Lobo Tennis Club. Senior Bart Scott had an impressive showing in this week's Icy Hot Intercollegiate All-American pre-qualifying tournament. Scott advanced to the round of 16 in singles in the 256-man field. He also teamed with David Kowalski to reach the round of 16 in the doubles competition. The Lobos will face stiff competition in this weekend's Fiesta Classic as players from Texas A&M, Northern Arizona University and New Mexico State will travel to Albuquerque for the tournament.

The UNM women's soccer team begins Mountain West Conference play this weekend with games at San Diego State Friday and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas Sunday. The Lobos (7-5-0) are currently fourth in the seven-team MWC. SDSU (7-3) is in third while UNLV (8-3-1) holds second. Utah (7-1-2) leads the league entering MWC play. The Aztecs are 4-0 at home this season and are led by junior Kim Castellanos, who has six goals and four assists for the season. The Rebels have lost only one match at home and have outscored their opponents 29-14 this year. Sophomore Annii Magliulo leads UNLV in scoring with 10 goals and two assists.

The UNM men's soccer team concludes non-conference play Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colo. against Drury College (Springfield, Mo.). The Lobos (9-2-0) are the top-ranked team in the seven-team Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, which begins league play next weekend. The Panthers (2-10) are led by senior John Pedroli, who has three goals and one assist for the season. Drury, an NCAA Division I independent in soccer, is on a three-game losing streak. UNM recently dropped out of the CollegeSoccer-News.com top 30 recently, but is still ranked sixth in the NSCAA Midwest region poll. The Lobos start MPSF play at home Oct. 20 against San Diego State University (3-6-1; seventh place MPSF).
