Theater workshop to get physical

Out of all the majors in the world, you had to choose that one.

How familiar is this line to all you fine arts majors out there? Fortunately, there are places that exist exactly for people such as yourselves -- especially if you are into theater.

One such place is The Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre in Blue Lake, Calif.

Marya Jones, an instructor in the theater department and a member of the Dell'Arte Touring Company, will be teaching a program called "In the Moment, In the Body: a Physical Theatre Workshop.

The Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre specializes in intense physical movement. According to its Web site, the school is "centered in the work of the creative actor whose imaginative command of space, gesture, dynamics and an articulate body/voice, gives expression to passions, ideas, feelings and relationships."

The program is dedicated to allowing the actor to flourish by finding his or her own definition of what theater is both through physical and mental imagination. This idea is promoted as the essence of the artistic experience through the program.

The Dell'Arte Company is a one of a kind school here in the United States and the workshop with Jones will be a unique experience. The workshop is an intensive, 10-hour introduction to Dell'Arte Physical Theatre and will run Saturday and Sunday.

This terrific experience gives the participant experiences in radical new ways to develop through the power of self-exploration, greater body awareness and group collaborations.

"This is great for dancers who want to act and actors who want to move," said Jones.

In this workshop, she will be focusing on the grand styles of theater, which includes melodrama, Comedia and the art of clown. The most important aspects of this will be dance, music and body work..

Jones said attending the Dell'Arte School is one of the most intense experiences she has ever had in theater. She said the schedule is rigorous and works the students six to seven days a week, including rehearsals

Through the program she was given the opportunity to travel to South America and perform in Europe. She also learned the essential skill of abstract thought, which is emphasized to understand the language of the body and the imagination.

"So much is required of you all the time," Jones said. "Because you're living it and breathing it."

Jones said the experience is vital to everyone, even those who are not involved with the fine arts.

"People who go through the program have [gained] a different perspective even if they are not involved in theater," she said.

So if you are curious or serious about the arts, this is a great opportunity to get your feet wet.

"In the Moment, In the Body: a Physical Theatre Workshop" happens on Saturday March 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and also on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will take place at The Performance Space, exact location.
