Staff Report

Men's Tennis

The UNM men's tennis team came up short in the Mountain West Conference championship match Saturday.

The San Diego State Aztecs downed the Lobos 4-0, giving them an automatic NCAA bid. UNM was awaiting word from the NCAA selection committee Sunday.

The Aztecs made quick work of the Lobos, winning two of three doubles matches to take the point and then easily winning three singles matches, clinching the victory.

At the No. 1 doubles spot, SDSU's Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo gathered an 8-5 win over Brent Salazar and Ryan Stotland. Daniel Jung and Armando Carrascosa sealed the point at No. 2, beating UNM's Bart Scott and Jasmin Hodzic. The sole Lobo bright spot came at the No. 3 position when David Kowalski and Divan Coetzee handed Felix Hardt and Gabe Coren an 8-6 loss.

The Aztecs sewed up the title with three quick victories in singles play.

Hart made short work of Salazar 6-2. 6-1 at the No. 3 position. At the No. 4 spot, Jung pounded Kowalski 6-1, 6-1 while Coren wrapped up the win with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Hodzic. The remaining matches were halted after the Aztecs secured the win.

Despite the loss, a record five Lobo players were selected to the All-MWC tennis team.

Scott earned his third such honor, while Coetzee picked up his second all-conference singles honor. Kowalski was named to the team for the first time.

Salazar and Stotland, the 28th-ranked doubles team in the nation, were also named All-MWC doubles.

Women's Tennis

The Lobos were unable to overcome San Diego State University in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament in San Diego.

The Aztecs bounced UNM from the tournament with a 4-1 win.

The Lobos started strong, winning the doubles point by way of victories from the teams of Michelle Heidbrink and Tiffany Robertson and Rachel Hatley and Maria Ruiz Fabrega.

SDSU dominated the singles matches, however, to earn a place in the finals.

The Aztecs' Silvia Tornier easily defeated the Lobos' Maja Kovacek 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot. Lindsey Hedberg handed Lobo Sandy Lukowski a 6-2, 6-0 loss at the No. 2 position. At No. 3, SDSU's Katalina Romero eased past Tjasa Suvak 6-4, 6-1. Indra Erichson wrapped up the championship for the Aztecs with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Rachel Hatley.

UNM ended its season with a 5-2 MWC record - good enough for third place and the best Lobo finish in school history.
