Lobos to enter Twilight track zone

Staff Report

The Lobo track team heads south to El Paso for the second time this year to compete in the Miners' UTEP Twilight track meet on Saturday.

The meet will mark the end of regular season competition for UNM. The Lobos will face in-state rival, New Mexico State University and a host of unattached athletes.

Some world-class athletes attending the meet include Stacy Dragila, the women's world record holder in the pole vault, and Nick Hysong, the Olympic Gold medallist in the men's pole vault. Former Lobo pole vaulter, Adam Keul, who is now training with Hysong, will challenge the gold medallist for the top spot in the vault.

UNM experienced success in its last trip to the Sun City and is expecting some qualifying performances this weekend.

"I hope we go down there and get some more regional qualifying marks," assistant coach Mark Henry said.

The track team recorded several personal best marks during the last meet in El Paso on March 29.

Senior David Lloyd will try to maintain his perfect record, having never lost a race on UTEP's Kidd Field.

The field events start at 3 p.m. and the running events at 6 p.m.

As the season wraps up, the Lobos will take a week off after the Twilight meet to prepare for the Mountain West Conference track championships. The MWC championships will take place in Albuquerque at the Great Friends of UNM Track Stadium May 14-17.
