Sports in Brief

Men's Basketball

The University of New Mexico men's basketball team was found in violation of NCAA by-law 13.1.1.3 and will have minor sanctions imposed upon it - but recent recruit Danny Granger has been reinstated to begin play at the end of the fall semester.

Granger transferred to UNM in January from Bradley. He was recruited to UNM by assistant coach Duane Broussard who coached at Bradley for eight years prior to joining head coach Ritchie McKay's Lobo staff.

Bradley filed a tampering complaint against UNM and refused to grant Granger a release from his scholarship.

The sanctions against UNM are the loss of two days of recruiting this month, Broussard will have to attend an NCAA compliance seminar and will not be allowed to make any recruiting calls during the month of July. Bradley still has refused to grant Granger a release, meaning he will have to pay his own tuition at UNM until the spring 2004 semester, when he will be placed on scholarship.

Granger led the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring with 19.2 PPG last year before leaving Bradley where he also averaged 7.9 RPG.

Women's Basketball

The Lobos announced the hiring of Brian O'Neill as their new assistant coach. O'Niell had been an assistant to former UNM men's head coach Dave Bliss at Baylor University for the last four years.

His Texas ties are expected to be a boon to the Lobos in recruiting, which is one of the reasons head coach Don Flanagan said he was hired. He will be Flanagan's No.3 assistant and along with recruiting will assist in scouting and game preparation.

Before joining Bliss's staff in his final year at UNM, O'Niell was head boy's basketball coach at Cibola high school. He also served as director of men's basketball operations at UNM for the 1998-99 season.

Football

Season tickets for the 2003-04 football season are currently available for the reserved section and general admission seating areas of University Stadium.

Season tickets for west reserved seating area range from $133 to $84 for adults and $88 to $42 for children. General admission season tickets are $70 for adults and $35 for children. There is also a family plan, which includes two adults and two children season tickets for $178.

The Lobos play home games against Southwest Texas Aug. 30; Brigham Young University Sept. 13; New Mexico State University Sept. 27; Utah State Oct. 4; the University of Nevada-Las Vegas Nov. 1; Colorado State University Nov. 7 and the Air Force Academy Nov. 15.

Golf

UNM men's head coach Glen Millican fired a three day total of 208 to win the Greater Albuquerque Men's Amateur Golf Championship last weekend. Millican scrambled for a final round of 70 at the Los Altos Public Golf Course, good enough for a two-shot victory over Robert Gonzales.

Current Lobo Tyler Symons finished third in the tournament, four shots behind Millican, with a three round score of 212.
