Sports in Brief

Baseball

Slugging Albuquerque Isotope right fielder Robert Stratton took home the Old Navy Home Run Derby title in Memphis on Tuesday.

Stratton cranked out 10 homers in the final round including a 470 foot drive to outpace Louisville's Brandon Larson in the final round 10-5.

Stratton advanced to the finals by cranking out seven dingers in the opening round.

For his towering drives, Stratton was awarded $1,000 in cash and $500 in Old Navy gift certificates.

The right fielder has been tearing up Triple-A baseball all year and leads the minor leagues with 29 long balls. He was also scheduled to participate in Wednesday's Triple-A All-Star game before returning to the Isotope lineup on Thursday.

Soccer

The UNM men's soccer team is already receiving national recognition after last year's 18-4 record. CollegeSoccerNews.com released its power rankings and have the Lobos ranked 20th in the nation.

UNM is gearing up for another strong run as it returns nine starters from last year's squad.

The Lobos kick off the season on the road against Wisconsin on Aug. 29 and return to the UNM Soccer Complex for their home opener against IUPUI on Sept. 5.

UNM will have a daunting task to repeat last year's efforts as it plays four teams in the top-20 in the most difficult schedule in recent memory.

The Lobos will get a crack at defending national champs UCLA on Oct. 9.

Football

The 10th Annual Women's Football Clinic is set to take place on Aug. 4.

The clinic is put on by the UNM football team and will include instruction from players and coaches.

The clinic is a chance for people to learn the basics of football and an opportunity to get up close with UNM football players.

Registration starts at 5:30 p.m. and the cost is $15 per person. All proceeds from the clinic will benefit the Send-A-Kid Program for underprivileged children to attend UNM football games.
