Column: Show spirit at 'Red Rally'

by Amanda Sims

ASUNM Vice President

ASUNM is sponsoring the first ever "Red Rally," on Thursday at 8 p.m. on Johnson Field, an event that will surely get you ready for Saturday's football game against intrastate rival NMSU at University Stadium.

One of the three ad hoc committees formed each semester by ASUNM planned the event. Each committee has an individual, specific purpose. This committee was formed in hope of increasing school spirit and participation, and this event is one of the committee's goals.

"Red Rally" is a pep rally and bonfire, including a burning of an artificial doll built as an Aggie and placed in the center of the bonfire, aimed at getting the students on campus pumped up for the UNM vs. NMSU game on Saturday. It has been several years since UNM has had any sort of bonfire, and we are excited to see all the school spirit resulting from this event.

"Red Rally" will take place on the northeast corner of Johnson Field. Between the bonfire, the stage and the huge crowd of people you won't be able to miss it. Please come wearing all the crazy UNM paraphernalia you have. Or even better, come dressed as a Lobo. There will be a "Craziest Lobo" competition and the top three participants will be chosen. First place receives a $75 prize, second place receives $50 and third place receives $25. There will also be a residence hall participation contest. The residence hall with the most participation will win a pizza party sponsored by ASUNM. Mark this night down on your calendar - it is not a night to miss.

I would like to thank several people who helped make this idea a reality. First off, I would like to thank Sen. Matt Burgess. Sen. Burgess is the chairman of the school spirit ad hoc committee and has worked non-stop the past few weeks in order to plan this amazing event. From the conception of this idea to the event itself, Sen. Burgess has stepped up and made it happen. Also, I am extending a special thank you to Student Activities Director Debbie Morris, whose advisement and effort makes all the difference in the world.

I hope that every student on campus will come out and join us at this event. It's time we show some real school spirit and support all of our athletic teams.

ASUNM not only plans fun events, we also give out scholarships. Every year ASUNM gives out six $500 scholarships called the Jenny Marie Ames Scholarship. The selection process is based on community service and campus involvement. The applications for this scholarship are available now at the ASUNM office and are due Monday, Oct. 13, to the ASUNM office by 5 p.m. Those awarded scholarships will receive their scholarship in spring 2004. If you have any questions about this scholarship please stop by the ASUNM office in SUB room 1016 or e-mail me at simmers16@hotmail.com.

Lastly, I would like to give you a quick update as to what the senate has been up to. The ASUNM fall budget process is underway and the Finance Committee had their first day of hearings Saturday. The budget will be passed at full senate on Oct. 1. Please join us if you are interested. The Steering and Rules Committee is busy working on numerous bills, including one that updates the Judicial Code. The Presidential Appointments Committee is currently working on a high school outreach luncheon. This is the second one ASUNM has had, and the committee is working hard to make it as huge a success as the last one.

If you would like to come see a full senate meeting, please join us in Lobo Room A & B at 6 p.m. on one of the following dates: Oct. 1, Oct. 22, Nov. 5, Nov. 19 and Dec. 10. At our next full senate meeting Karen Abrahams, the director of Alumni Relations, will be speaking regarding the UNM Homecoming Week.

Also, today Cherry/Silver applications and Fall Frenzy group sign up sheets are due to the ASUNM office by 5 p.m. For more information on these events, please visit our website at www.unm.edu/~asunm.

See you all on Thursday at "Red Rally!"
