Sports in Brief

Men's Soccer

The men's soccer team started its 2003 season Friday with a hard- fought 1-0 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers. Lance Watson scored UNM's first goal of the season during the second half of play, finding the back of the net in the 72nd minute. Ryan McVay had the assist on the goal.

Despite missing a key starter in Brandon Moss, the Lobos played textbook defense, giving goalkeeper Andrew Weber his 12th career shutout. The Badgers finished second in the Big 10 last year.

Saturday the Lobos took on nationally ranked Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Panthers, who are No. 18 in the country, squeezed by UNM with a 1-0 victory. Dale Weiler scored on a bicycle-kick during the 86th minute of play. Goalkeeper Weber, forward Watson and midfielder Stian Eriksen were named to the all-tournament team at Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

With the defeat the Lobos drop to 1-1-0. Next week UNM will play host at the soccer complex in the TLC Plumbing and Utility Invite.

The women's soccer team did not get to finish its season opener against Texas Tech on Friday due to lightning. Because UNM does not have an open date later in the season, the Lobo-Raider showdown will not be made up.

On Saturday, UNM headed to Norman, Okla. to take on the Sooners. The game ended in an overtime defeat for the Lobos 2-1. Oklahoma's Logan Womack scored off a rebound from a missed shot during the 100th minute of play.

Next weekend the Lobos will take part in the Nike Classic Tournament at UC-Irvine.

Women's Volleyball

Fresno State spoiled UNM's season opener in three games at the Bulldog Invite this weekend (30-20, 30-22, 30-11.)

UNM then took on Cal Poly and lost three games to none (30-21, 31-29, 30-13.)

In the final game on Saturday, UNM took on Idaho State and lost in four games (26-30, 30-20, 30-19, 30-22.)

Anna Reines, a UNM senior out of Big Lake, Minn., was selected to the all-tournament team.

New Mexico will look for its first victory next weekend as the team plays host for the Comcast Lobo Invite at the Johnson Gym.
