UNM women blanked at home

The UNM women's soccer team was defeated twice this weekend on its home turf.

The Lobos fell to the University of Wyoming Friday night 1-0 and to Colorado College 3-0 Sunday afternoon.

In both games UNM outshot the opponent, but failed to get the ball in the net.

The Cowgirls, who are 3-0 in the Mountain West Conference, stopped nine Lobo shots and two cornerkicks in a 14-minute span midway through the first half of Friday night's match.

The only score came in the 35th minute when Wyoming's Doreen Thompson stole the ball at midfield, drove past Lobo defenders and set teammate Mercy Adetoye up for the shot on goal. Adetoye shot the ball past UNM goalkeeper Kristen Winters from nearly 25 yards out.

The Cowgirls came out aggressive in the second half, firing seven shots in as many minutes early on, but the Lobo defense let none get through.

UNM's best scoring opportunity came in the 58th minute when senior midfielder Erchen Theys got a shot passed the Cowgirl goalkeeper. However, the ball was deflected by the goal post on the right side.

The Lobos were able to take 25 shots, allowing Wyoming to get in only 15.

The Cowgirl defense won the game, as Lori Scheider shutout the Lobos with five saves. Winters had two saves for UNM.

The Lobos were able to get in 20 open shots Sunday afternoon, while Colorado College had only nine.

CC's Kelly Sweitzer caught the Lobos off guard in the opening minutes of the game. Sweitzer took a cross from Sarah Chadwick and sent a shot sailing over Winter's head.

The Lobos had only four shots on goal in the first period.

The Lobos opened the second half with a series of three quick shots. The UNM offense kept play on the Tiger's side of the field for 10 straight minutes.

Then in the 55th minute Sweitzer stole the ball, strode off down field and struck again from 10 yards out on the left side.

Despite the loss, Winters said UNM directed most of the game.

"I think we had a lot of control," she said. "It's just that when we got a little disorganized, they took advantage of those situations. Other than that, I think we had pretty good control of the game."

The final score for the Tigers came in the 71st minute.

Forward Stephanie Kernan took a pass from Molly Holmes, who stayed in front of Lobo defenders and converted the shot.

Head coach Kit Vela said her team underachieved.

"We gave ourselves trouble," she said. "They had six shots on goal and three goals. We had 10 shots and no goals. You've got to score goals to win games."

The Lobos are in the middle of a four-game home series. Conference play continues on Friday when the UNLV Rebels invade the UNM Soccer Complex for a 6 p.m. match.
