Tonight UNM will not only showcase a group of talented and diverse music professors in Keller Hall, but also a husband and wife who teach and play together.
Kimberly Fredenburgh, assistant professor of music at UNM, has put together the recital where she will play viola while her husband, Assistant Professor Kevin Vigneau, will play the obo. Besides the bond between Fredenburgh and Vigneau, the common bond of each piece in this show is the viola, making the performance unique in sound.
"The bass and viola are not often heard together," Fredenburgh said. "They are two lower voices playing together."
Trio New Mexico, which is made up of Fredenburgh, Vigneau and clarinet professor Keith Lemmons, will be performing a 12-minute piece called "Armenian Impressions" composed by Michael Kimber.
"We are always looking for more repertoire for our group, and it just so happened that he (Kimber) had imagined it for this kind of group of instruments," Fredenburgh said. "I don't even think it was published yet, and it is has never been performed in New Mexico."
Vigneau described the piece as eastern in flavor, with altered scales and moods.

"It has a strong dance rhythm in it as well," he said. "I think the audience will enjoy it."
Fredenburgh said this performance should attract all different kinds of people.
"This is a good introductory concert for people who are interested in sampling the Keller Hall faculty series because it has such a range of instruments and works," she said. "There is something for everybody."
Fredenburgh said the advantage of performing in Keller Hall is the small venue.
"It is a rather intimate setting," she said. "So it's a good chance to be close to the stage."
Fredenburgh and Vigneau both agree faculty performances are a chance to interact with their colleagues, present new works and become role models for their students.
Other faculty members who will be featured in the performance are Susan Patrick, David Schepps, Mark Tatum and Brady McElligott.
"Our applied music faculty is really world class here," Fredenburgh said. "It is one of the really strong parts of the college of Fine Arts. I hope to have an enthusiastic audience."
