Rumble, art world, rumble

Three-week event features workshops

UNM artists, get ready to rumble.

UNM's first Artists' Rumble is set to kick off today, fusing an art-making workshop with an art exhibition, both of which are ever-changing, have virtually no rules and are totally unconventional.

The ASA Gallery is opening its doors to this three-week long art madness where students will produce works of art in the workshops and leave them in the gallery for all to see.

A panel discussion featuring professional artists who will facilitate the sessions begins tonight at 6 p.m in the Acoma room in the SUB. The artists include Santa Fe artist Franky Kong, TVI art instructor Lynn Johnson, UNM assistant professor of Art History Laura Andre, professor of Media Arts Bryan Konefsky and UNM small metals instructor Rebecca Blankley.

"The idea of the panel is to get people talking about collaboration in art,"said Carol Cheh, curator of the rumble.

The rumble's original concept came from a similar endeavor of Franky Kong's in Santa Fe. This rumble "was developed for the UNM community in response to a need for more cross-disciplinary art projects," Cheh said.

During each of the three-guided Saturday sessions, artists will have to work together in an attempt to produce gallery-worthy art. Artists can use provided materials or bring their own supplies.

"There are no rules," Cheh said. "I'm going to leave it open, and play it by ear."

Cheh also said she received permission for artists to paint, draw or use the walls of the Art Students Association gallery.

Because the artists can come in during the week to work on their projects, Cheh describes the rumble as a "constantly evolving work in progress." This also makes it more interesting for the viewer, she said, as the gallery could look completely different from one day to the next.

All interested artists are encouraged to attend the panel discussion tonight. On Saturdays, Feb. 7, 14 and 21 from noon to 4 p.m. professional artists will work with the artists.

The rumble is open to anyone who is interested, but space is limited.
