Track and Field

The UNM track and field team had a successful showing in Houston on Saturday, and two Lobos brought home first-place honors.

Redshirt sophomore Jacquelyne Gallegos cruised to her second-straight victory in the 3,000-meter run and set a personal record with a time of 9:57.47.

Gallegos' second win and another personal record came in the 5,000-meter race, clocking in at 17:47.01. Right on the heels of Gallegos was sophomore Timmie Murphy, who followed by 15 seconds.

Junior Jamie Fishencord broke her own school record in the weight throw and led all Lobo throwers, placing second. Fishencord increased the school record to 52-09.25.

On the men's side, junior Ben Ortega paced UNM, with a first-place finish in the 5,000.

Fellow junior Nick Martinez was the runner-up in the 3,000-meter and came in with a time of 8:27.97. Senior Sean Flaherty was close behind Ortega and came in fourth.

Skiing

The UNM Ski team surpassed Denver University, Colorado and Utah to win the New Mexico Invitational on Saturday in Taos, thanks to another stellar race by the women's team.

The Nordic women won the 5K Freestyle race, with junior Martina Stursova leading the way with a first-place finish.

Senior Jennifer Delich won the slalom event for the women's Alpine team, for her first victory of the season.

Delich's supporting cast in the slalom race consisted of sophomore Kathrin Spendier, who placed fourth, and sophomore Gladys Weidt came in fifth.

Sophomore Trine Lundamo placed sixth for the women's Nordic team, and junior Andrea Roberts rounded out the Lobos' scoring, with a 10-place finish.

Meanwhile, sophomore Geir-Endre Rogn's sixth-place finish led the men's Nordic team to a fourth-place finish in the 10K freestyle race.

The Alpine men had a strong showing behind freshman Lars Loeseth, who placed second in the slalom. Freshman Peter Roering came in seventh, and sophomore Christian Jensen finished eighth.

It was the second win of the year for the UNM ski team, and the Lobos now trail Denver by 4.5 points for the lead in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association.

Softball

The Lobos got off to a good start in the Arizona Softball Pepsi Classic, defeating Ole Miss and Cal State-Northridge, but ultimately lost to No. 2 Arizona 11-0 in the championship game Sunday in Tuscon.

Wildcat pitcher Alicia Hollowell struck out 10 UNM batters and allowed only one hit in four innings for her fourth-consecutive shut out.
